I bought this last week before I moved into my uni room. There was a welcome note written on my noticeboard when I got there, and I was afraid of any more surprises from the former inhabitants.
So we (my best friend of 7 years, who has come to uni with me, and I) skipped off to Asda, parents in tow, to get food and general supplies so that we wouldn't have to pay for our own stuff for a while. I got this Dettol Disinfectant Spray, because I am lazy, and it looked easy and smells of apples, and she got the Dettol in a bottle variety.

It is an aerosol can full of dettol. You simply spray it on things and wait for it to dry, which it does within a minute or two. It's so easy to use, I sprayed it on everything.
I sprayed the desk, I sprayed everything in the bathroom. I sprayed the phone, I sprayed the door handles and then I ran out of things to make smell of apples. I sat with a cotton bud and picked all the fluff out of my keyboard, and then sprayed that. It's nice having a clean, shiny, germ-free keyboard, especially considering the amount of grossness that came out of it. (I'm never having pets again)
But it doesn't smell of apple very long, and I'm always a bit wary that the more I get rid of these regular germs that aren't actually doing me any harm at the moment, they might turn into scary giant evil Germs of Doom that will eat my flesh and make me grow feathers. It's a bit like if you take paracetamol for every slight twinge, and after a few years you have to take about 12 of them for a headache...
It's useful if someone in your family has athletes foot, or herpes, or even just a cold, you can just creep around behind them with this spray, and Dettol everything they touch so you don't catch it.
---------~*Cleaning Effects*~--------
Since you just spray it and wander off, it doesn't actually do anything about visible dirt. This is something that simply kills germs, so if you have an actual dirty house, you need to clean first, and then spray this to kill the germs. For this reason, I'm not actually sure how long it lasts. I assume it lasts until the next lot of germs find their way into your house. So if you're generally clean, wash your hands (with Dettol) after going to the toilet and after cooking, it should last a long time. Otherwise, germs move about so easily, it'll last until the next time you open a window, or until the next time someone coughs in your presence.
I'll stop now, because I can already see some of you squirming in your seat.
I really don't know what sort of people Dettol are marketing this at, if you're going to have Hepatitis A on your telephone handset, but I'd assume hypochondriacs, or OCD sufferers.
------~*How Much Does It Cost?*~-------
It's actually quite expensive, for what it is. I got it from Asda, and it was £2.98, whilst my friend's Dettol in a bottle was £1.98. I think you pay the extra quid for the convenience and the fact that it makes everything smell of apples.
Tesco price check reliably informs me that Tesco do indeed have it cheaper, with the remarkably low price of £2.97. I don't know why they do that. I'd be happier if they made it a round £3, and then I wouldn't have those three pence floating around in my purse forever. They just make me mourn the loss of penny sweets.
----------~*Is it better?*~--------
No. It's not. It's easier and more convenient, but in the end, regular Dettol in a bottle just has far more uses. You can do all this with Dettol in a bottle and then mop your floor and clean the toilet, and perhaps bleach some clothes if you wish.
It does make everything smell of apples, which is nice since most cleaning products make everything smell of either hospitals, swimming pool, or flowers, none of which are nice. It doesn't make things smell like apple for long though. After a friend came round to stay, I had to buy a can of Oust to get rid of the Boy Smell from my room (which actually smelled worse than the boy) so it doesn't even work as a nice air freshener.
Also, it doesn't last as long as regular Dettol (I assume). I sprayed everything in my room and there's now only half a can left. This means I can spray everything in my room twice, for £2.98. I'll have to make sure nobody ill visits me. It's been a nice guard against freshers' flu so far though. *touch wood*
--------~*Should I Buy It?*~--------
I'd say this should only ever be used if someone in the family is ill, or if you move into a new house or shared property, or something like that. It's got to be a one-off purchase, partly because it's so expensive and partly because if you go around making everything smell of apples more than twice a year, you will be sectioned. I've always been brought up on the philosophy that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger (unless you lose a limb) and germs just build up your immune system. If you use this all the time and don't let your children ever get the common cold, they will get the flu and it'll be worse because they won't have any natural defences against it.
Also, I really don't believe that anyone's house is that dirty. Those Flash adverts for example... yes, I suppose it is quite easy to spill your food on the hob, but if you wipe it up within a YEAR of doing it, you'll still only need a bit of fairy liquid. If you've seen How Clean Is Your House, even they only use a lemon to get years worth of grease off peoples' ovens. I don't buy into this whole cleaning malarkey, but I do like things that smell of apples.
-----------------------------
So, to sum up, if someone in your family has Athletes Foot or Hepatitis A and you don't want to catch it, this is the perfect solution. Otherwise, just get regular Dettol.
I am reccomending this as a one-off purchase. I really don't want to encourage anyone's OCD, but I suppose if you must disinfect things, it's better that it smells of apples.
Advantages: Great smell and promises to kill lots of germs and viruses. Disadvantages: The size of the can and the price!
~ Packaging and Price ~
This comes in a chunky, cylindrical aerosol spray can. Given that this is the apple fragrance the top section is suitably ‘attired’ in apple green.
It is dispensed via an easy to reach press-down spray nozzle but for those of you interested in the safety of little hands getting hold of it, it doesn’t have an off / on option as so many other disinfectants have nowadays!
The 300ml spray can is currently priced at:

...300ml aerosol can with the Dettol logo, a sword and apples(???) on the front. That's because the flavour/smell is green apples! The instructions are on the back, and there are lots of those, along with lots of promises and information. Advantages: Quite a few Disadvantages: Does it work????
Normally I would not have bothered with something like this but we got it free in a "Potty Pack" actually it was not free as the pack cost us £10.00. However I am reliably informed that it cost £2.89. Obviously because we bought a potty pack it means that we have one of those messy creatures called a baby/toddler (Tom). Now I too have see all those adds with the mother spraying a ball before she allows the kids to play with it or spraying the telephone ... ...both patronising and worring at the same time. No we don't want our kids to catch other peoples germs or eat off a high chair tray that has the same amount of germs as a hoover bag but we also want to "get a life". My usual method of dealing with any of lifes yukkies is a spray bottle with a mix of Domestos and water and yet I have to admit to a sneaky sense of satisfaction with this spray. It has a very light touch so it is no effort just to give ...

Dettol is a familiar name in the hygeine market so when I first tried this spray I was confident it would do what it promised. The scent I always opt for is Fresh Waters as I think the name suggests a not too overpowering scent.
It comes in a 300ml can - I think this is a fairly standard size for this kind of product. Directions for use are as you'd expect - point into centre of room and spray, however as already suggested it can also be used directly on surfaces. The price is around £1.26 (price at Tesco.com at time of writing this review) which is fairly expensive for an aerosol spray air freshener (for comparison, Airwick ...

With my Mr Muscle, I would usually spray and have to rinse off but with this Dettol it says it is safe to use where food is prepared and there is no need for rinsing of surfaces. This i think is better than my old brand.
When using it I find it easy to use and it seems to do its job well. Of course I really cant tell if it is actually killing off all these germs it claims to as all germs are invisible. It certainly works well on all the visible dirt that you usually get in a kitchen.
I spray all my work surfaces and let it settle for a minute or so before going round with my clean cloth and wiping it all down. Things like ketchup and gravy come off with ease. It works well as cleaning down things like the microwave and the kettle.
