I took Dianette for three years. I used it as a contraceptive pill and to help prevent acne. If onlyI was told the truth behind this pill from my doctors. When I was first prescribed this pill I asked the doctor many questions about side-effects and dosage which he assured me would be okay.
Before taking the pill I read through the very long instruction booklet. I started taking the pill and everything was going okay. My first problem was that I didn’t realise that you had to take the pill for a whole month before being protected. I was told by my friend rather than the doctor. Thank god I didn’t
get pregnant.
Secondly, it took two years and two different surgeries before a NURSE told me that I would need to get a blood test to check for liver damage (because it’s a high dose pill). This freaked me out and I was extremely angry I was not told this before being prescribed it. Surely I have a choice about this?
Thirdly, I was unable to loss weight while on this pill. I was going to the gym four times a week and eating well and I was actually gaining inches and weight.
Fourthly, I got a rash on my legs which seemed to be around forever. The doctor thought it was eczema.
Finally, after reading through discussion boards on the Boots website I found out I wasn’t alone with my problems. I went to my doctors and changed pills. Happily my problems disappeared and I even managed to loss 15 pounds.
Dianette is a combined pill. This means the main active hormones are anti-androgen and oestrogen. It prevents the release of eggs into the womb. It helps stop the sperm from getting through the womb and therefor to an egg. It also makes the womb lining unsuitable for an egg to grow.
Compared to other pills Dianette has high doses of hormones in it.
Dianette is used to treat acne and hersutism. It’s main use is as a contraceptive pill. It comes in a pack which contains 21 pills that lasts a month. The doctor will normally prescribe 3-6 months worth. The pill needs to be taken everyday at a regular time for 21 days. There will be a 7 day break in which time you will have a period.
If you miss your scheduled time, don’t worry as long as you take the pill within 12 hours you are still covered. However, if it’s been longer than 12 hours use another form of contraception or refrain from sex.
>>>Side effects:
As with all medication, side-effects do occur. All contraceptive pills have some sort of side-effects, but Dianette has many which may occur. To name a few: ~ nausea ~ vomiting ~ indigestion ~ brown patches on body and face ~ headaches ~ breast tenderness ~ intolerance of contact lenses ~ gallstones ~ fits ~ weight fluctuations ~ rashes and itching ~ changes in moods and loss of sexual desire
There are also three main serious side effects which may occur. These are deep vein thrombosis, liver disease and strokes.
Do not let these side effects put you off taking the contraceptive pill, because they only happen in rare cases. Apart from nausea which is quite common, in which case your doctor can prescribe you a different type of pill.
>>>Warning
As with all contraceptive pills, they do not protect you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). I would advise using the pill along with barrier methods such as the condom for better protection. My advice is to only take the pill alone for health reasons or when you are in a loving and more importantly trusting relationship.
>>>My recommendations
Dianette works to prevent acne, but I still had to use topical medicine to prevent it totally. You stop feeling like it works after about a year. In my case Tetracyline (an antibiotic) worked better than Dianette in treating acne.
I took Dianette for three years so it does work as a contraception pill.
However, it is a very high dose pill. These excess hormones can do funny things to your body. So unless you have acne or hersutism I would suggest taking another type of pill that contains less hormones.
As with all medication consult your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
Remember - what may work for one person may not work for another and vice-versa.

I'm sure the leaflet you get with them states that they give immediate protection? or am i just going mad??I was on these to deal with my pcos but hated them for the weight gain especially so no longer take any pill.

Thanks for a great op. I took Dianette for 5 years because of the acne I had in my early twenties. The skin benefits were quick acting and very impressive although I share the same experience as you with the weight gain / inability to lose weight. I also began to suffer from extreme and violent PMS. I was then prescribed a new contraceptive pill called Yasmin which is supposed to be good for PMS (which it is) but his made my put on 2 stone in weight in four months! I am now off the pill completely (I'm single again - yippeee!) and feel much better, slimmer and the acne has gone!

excellant op. am coming off it after 3 1/2 years.have had all sorts of side-effects and want to know how much is affected by this pill. actually went to my GP for advice, telling her i'd read an article in a medical journal which explained you should not be on dianette for longer than 2 years and she rubbished it. i've learnt not to trust GPs ! Listen to your body! nat ;o)

Review of Dianette Contraceptive Pill
Advantages: Helps skin to clear somewhat, prevents pregnancy if taken correctly, prevents period pains. Disadvantages: Weight gain, mood swings, varicose veins (these may not affect everyone but there is a possibility of those side effects and more).
