As with a lot of women out there I suffer with Adult Acne. No matter how much you wash your skin, or how many chocolates you sacrifice there is just no cure. Not for me anyway. Or so I thought.
I had been talking to my GP about possible treatments for Acne, and had heard through the Internet that the Contraceptive Pill can sometimes be the cause of Acne. But if you don't want hundreds of kids running around what choice was there but to take the Pill.
I was eventually told by my GP that there was a Pill on the market that could help with the Acne, but it came with a whole bunch of warnings.
*THE PILL*
Dianette was the name of the Pill. I had not heard of it before. Dianette contains Cyproterone Acetate, this is a medicine
which attaches itself to Androgen receptors in the skin, and it blocks the receptors so that the Androgen cannot affect the skin. Apparently Androgens stimulate the growth of the skin including the grease-glands and the hairs that grow from it. They also cause the grease-glands to make large amounts of 'Sebum' the oily substance that gives you greasy skin. So by blocking the receptors this should stop the skin producing too much 'Sebum' or grease.
As well as reducing the build up of grease, it also protects you from becoming pregnant, which is the most important function of the Comtraceptive Pill. This works in the same way that all other Pills work, by stoping the release of Eggs (Ova) and also thickening the mucus in the neck of the womb so that sperm cannot get through (Yippeee!)
*WARNINGS*
There is a full booklet in with the pills which you must read thoroughly before you need to take your first pill. Some of the reasons for not taking this pill are:
- If any close family member has ever had blood clots in the legs, lungs, or anywhere.
- If you or any close family member has ever had a Heart attack or Stroke
- Sickle-cell anaenia
- Breast Cancer
- Severe Diabetes with changes to the blood vessels
You get the idea. This booklet also warns you about taking other medication aswell as taking the Pill. You must always check with your GP regarding any other medication. This booklet also warns of the dangers of taking this pill whislt you are pregnant as it may cause problems with the developing organs of the Foetus (Baby) at an early stage.
- Your skin becomes yellow (Jaundice), you develop Hepatitis (Inflammation of the Liver) or if your whole body starts itching.
- Severe depression
There are a few more but this just gives you some ideas.
*TAKING DIANETTE*
If taking Dianette for the first time, start taking your first pill on the first day of bleeding of your next period. You need to take the pill marked with the correct day of the week.
Continue taking them once every day following the correct order for the days of the week. This should continue for the first 3 weeks. You then need to take a week break once you have finished all of the pills on the sheet.
After one week you should then continue to take the pills from the next sheet remembering which day you started on. i.e if your first day of bleeding was a Friday, then you need to start the new pack on the Friday aswell.
They recommend that you try to take the pill at the same time every day.
If you are switching to Dianette from a different pill then after you have finished your 3 week course you don't leave a week break. Go straight on to your new sheet of Dianette. You may miss a period in this time which is very common, but you will have protection straight away.
All other directions are containes in the booklet, but if you are unsure you should always speak to your GP.
*HOW IS IT WORKING FOR ME*
So far I am only on to my second month of taking Dianette. I was told that you should see some improvement in your skin after a few weeks, but it would take a bit longer to see a reduction in Acne.
So far my skin has deffinately improved. My skin feels a bit drier, especially on my forehead and cheeks. I did see an increase in spots for a while, it's as though my skin was being flushed, so all the spots came at once. But I think they are starting to clear up a bit.
I haven't noticed any side effects so far, although I did miss my period after starting the first pack, and have only just had a period. ( I was praying that I wasn't pregnant) This can be a very touchy moment. But be patient. I had to wait 7 weeks.
My GP has only given me 3 months supply of Dianette, and has told me that I will need regular checkups. They do recommend that you don't take this Pill for any longer than a few years. So unfortunately this is not a long term solution to Acne, and I may have to live with it for a little longer.
Overall I probably would not recommend taking this Pill if it is just for Acne problems, as the problems you may experience by taking Dianette outweigh the need to have a clear skin. After all, the inside of your body is far more important than the outside of it.
Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps.

I used to eb on this but they had to take me off as you can only be on it for so long until it causes an increased risk of blood clots. I am now on Yasmin and it has been the best pill I have been on so far x
