I remember the days when the only choice to be made when you fancied a can of Cola was whether you preferred Pepsi or Coke. In today’s market you can have your Cola with the caffeine removed or the sugar substituted, you can have it flavoured with cherry or laced with a hint of vanilla, you can even try it with a tinge of Lemon which is where I find myself today with a six pack of Diet Coke with Lemon in the fridge and a review of the brew ready to be written. You see I have one of those mini drinks fridges next to my computer tower so I don’t have to move when I fancy a drink, the fridge of course needs to be stocked with 330ml cans so I find myself trying many a different beverage as I sit using my computer.
Original Diet Coke was launched in America in 1982 and has become the best selling sugar free carbonated drink in the world. Coca-Cola was keen to exploit this market and so have introduced many variants on the plain diet coke product. In 1983 caffeine free diet coke arrived on the scene followed by diet cherry coke in 1986, the introduction of new flavours then ceased for 15 years before the subject of this review, Diet Coke with Lemon arrived in 2001. Diet Vanilla Coke surfaced a year later and the latest incarnation Diet Coke with Lime is due to hit the shop shelves any time now.
A can of Diet Coke with Lemon is silver in colour with Diet Coke written in the distinctive Coca-Cola script, wedges of lemon are positioned about the can with little yellow stars scattered haphazardly to complete the scene. A small part of the can is given over to Ingredients and Nutritional information with a 330ml can offering an acceptable 4.62 calories. The artificial sweeteners used are aspartame and acesulfame and the drink does contain a source of phenylalanine, whatever that is! To finish on the packaging, the can is Aluminium and so can (and should) be recycled. As well as being available in 330ml cans (which can be bought singly or in packs of four, six, twelve and twenty-four), Diet Coke with Lemon is available in 500ml and 2 litre bottles.
Pulling the tab of the can releases a pleasant gassy sigh and a closer sniff reveals that familiar cola smell with the merest of citric hints. The bubbles dance on my tongue as I take a swig and the flavour envelopes my mouth. The Cola flavour is still very much in evidence but an underlying lemony taste is also present, in my opinion it could do with being a little more lemony as you really have to concentrate to enjoy the added flavour. Once swallowed the familiar sugary cola taste is left on the palette as well as a strange sensation on the teeth, sadly no hint of the added lemon is left which again I feel is a shame.
My second taste test really showed me how Diet Coke with Lemon could be used to glorious effect, and that is as a mixer for Whisky. I usually enjoy my scotch on its own but for the purposes of research I dribbled a measure into a tumbler and topped it up with the Cola. And it really worked, something in the taste complimented the Cola beautifully, I find with a normal Whisky and Cola the sweetness drags the whisky down but the added lemon seems to lift the scotch so that its taste is not suffocated. It really did add to the whole drinking experience. Emboldened by my new discovery I checked my drinks cabinet to see what else I could try Diet Coke with Lemon with, sadly the only liquor that had any chance of making a semi decent drink with Cola was Rum. Undeterred I poured a tot into my glass and topped it up with the Cola, again it was pleasant though I did feel it lacked the whiskies suitability, I also feel that Rum does need the sugary taste of original Cola to balance it out. It was probably a good job this combination failed as I would have ended up mixing Diet Coke with Lemon with every alcoholic drink I could find, and my head could not have coped with that.
In closing, I have found out that Diet Coke with Lemon is a pleasant enough drink although a touch more lemon flavour would have improved the drinking quality. It is also a nice mixer if you select your alcohol carefully and with the low calorie count it can be enjoyed by those watching their weight. That said, too much Cola of any kind is bad for your teeth so it should be imbibed sparingly. Four star out of five from me.
Advantages: Sugar free and less than one calorie Disadvantages: Too sweet for me!
...succumb, I usually go for Diet Coke, so when I seen Diet Coke with Lemon in the cooler at RS McColl’s, I felt obligated to give it a go.

Sometime in the eighties Coca Cola and Schweppes decided to clean up their act and offer the public more choices as people were starting to become very health conscious and pressure was being put on them by government bodies, so they introduced Diet Coke, ...

...together and I tried the Diet version, to my surprise I actually preferred the taste it was slightly less sweet and it didn’t seem to be a thick in consistency so you teeth would apparently get coated with a film of sticky chemical…mind you with all the added chemical s and the high acidity I still don’t think it does you much good.

...and gals, it's your favourite diet drink but with a twist (literally) - it's lemon flavoured!
Actually, it's not - it's just normal diet cola with a hint of lemon flavouring. Otherwise it would be lemonade that was brown instead of clear. You follow? No? Thought not.
Packaging:

It really is the blandest, dullest drink you can buy. As such, the introduction of the lemon twist is a good move, as it livens up the drink no end. You aren't bombarded with lemon when you take a swig - instead, you experience the normal DC taste, ...

Advantages: Lemony when cold Disadvantages: nasty flat and/or warm
...free. But I don't like diet coke, and I only like 'fat' coke when it's free. (Bosses get upset if they offer their staff coke and they reply that they'd rather drink tap water). But I found that with ice and lemon, it was a different drink somehow. Like water tastes different too. And so despite my aversion to coke and its weight conscious friend, and because I have left the industry,I take the plunge.
For 72p you can purchase a 500ml bottle of ... ...diet coke bottle, save for a few details. Primarily the label says Diet coke with lemon on it. There is also a fair amount of yellow on the label, and even a picture of a lemon. If you're still not sure, check the cap. This one won't be red it'll be..yellow. They're clever aren’t they these Coca Cola peeps?
So now you've found your beverage and paid your hard earned 72p at the checkout (prices may vary) you are now on to the important business ...

Advantages: Same price as regular Coke Disadvantages: Might as well drink Sprite
...Coca-Cola released the all new Diet Coke with Lemon, holy cow was I expectant! I don't usually drink Diet Coke because I don't find it to have as much flavour as the original red can however, the idea of lemon changes everything for me!
So; down to the newsagents I go on Saturday afternoon for my first sip of the new taste. First impressionss mean everything to me, so after the initial bubbling on my tongue; my excitement ebbed away. The stuff tastes ... ...are the same as regualr diet coke, but quite frankly, I don't believe it.
The lemon flavour does not have a natural flavour (I was imagining an ice cold glass served in a restaurant with a wedge of lemon on the edge to nicely flavour it) and it does over-power the taste of the Coke entirely.
There is the regular carbonation and there is not a problem with the sweetness, however the lemony flavour you are expecting does not exist. It tastes like ...

Advantages: It tastes really great Disadvantages: Leaves a slight aftertaste
Tonight my friend brought me a 330ml can of DietCoke with Lemon and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how realistically lemony it was!
Up until today I had been reluctant to try this product because several of my work mates had said that it tasted revolting. Now having tried it myself I have to say how wrong they are. I found that adding the lemon has made the Coke far more refreshing and it has a wonderfully tangy taste. Although I had my can unchilled it tasted just as good unlike the Cherry Coke which tastes diabolical unchilled. My thirst was really quenched after drinking this which for me, as a diabetic, is a rare occurence.

Advantages: Cheap, Well Known, Good Taste, Many Many products in this franchise Disadvantages: Other Brands making carbonated cola could be a challenge but still the top brand
Well i dont know where to start, This brand name coca-cola is by far the biggest drinks franchise known to the public eye, from the first can of this i had i was hooked, i have followed the coca-cola franchise throughout my life, they have released many flavours from coke cherry, lemon, lime, DietCoke, Coke Zero . . . They always seem to outdo themselves, and not long ago they brought out a whole new line to challenge companies, Relentless Energy, instead of basing their products entirely around cola they made a great tasting energy drink with a large variety this toook the world by storm as people are now drinking this more than most other brands, it has better value for money at one GBP per 500ml, back to the subject coca cola is the most popular Carbonated Cola Drink and its not hard to see why, great taste consistently and always ...

Advantages: Its Coca Cola Disadvantages: doesnt taste very nice at all
I am a big fan of DietCoke, infact I would say I am addicted to it, I prefer it to Pepsi any day.
When out with friends I usually have a glass of DietCoke with a slice of lemon in it and find it quite enjoying, so when i saw DietCoke with a twist of lemon on sale I thought hey why not give this a try, so I did.
It was on offer at the time 75p for a 500ml bottle, packaging was as normal DietCoke but with the workd with a twist of lemon on it.
Ok so I come out of the shop and opened the bottle, firstly the smell of lemon was quite distinctive then I tasted it and the only thing I can use to describe the taste is, can you imagine biting into a slice of lemon and think of your face screwing up, well that's how I felt, I took another sip just to see if the second would be any better but no it wasnt.
Now if that was only ...
