I was always a fan of coca cola and loved to have it when at the pub or for a special treat. I have recently though moved on to loving diet coke instead. Part of this probably stems from the fact that I always seem to be on a diet these days and at least I have no worries that I am adding to my food calories with my drinks too. I have also actually grown to really like the taste.

Diet coke came from Coca Cola who are the biggest manufacturer of soft drinks worldwide. I am sure if you went to any country in the world people would know what coca cola is. Coca Cola as a brand has been around a long time but Diet coke is a more recent addition to the portfolio of drinks. It is one that has actually stuck around though unlike their attempts at New Coke.

The premise of Diet Coke has always been that it is a diet drink as it only has around 1 calorie in a 330ml can. This is very different to the full fat coke, which has 100 calories. If you consider it is only a drink, this is quite a lot. The advertising has also always been based around selling it to women. I am sure many of you will remember the diet coke break advert with the hunky man. The newest advert has recently been shown with Duffy as the new spokesperson.

Diet Coke can be bought in many ways from cans to bottles of various sizes. You can also buy it by the draft in pubs and clubs. I do think it has a different taste in the different forms though. I much prefer it from a can, maybe as it is kept fresher? I often by alcoholic drinks with a diet coke mixer when out in clubs. The containers tend to have silver labels, which is the colour for diet coke, and the diet coke label so you can distinguish it from the many other types of coke.

The actual drink is a fizzy beverage that is brown in colour. It is exactly the same colour as coca cola so you would need to taste it to know the difference. It is hard to describe the taste of coke but it is quite a thick heavy liquid that tastes very sweet. It seems to taste a lot better chilled, which is what they suggest on the packaging. I love a cold glad of diet coke with ice and lemon in the summer. As I previously mentioned this drink can be used as a mixer with many alcoholic beverages including vodka, rum and JD. Diet coke has quite a different taste to Coca Cola. I am not sure what the difference is but many people prefer the original. This may be due to the fact that sweeteners are used instead of sugar and people can tell the difference. I personally actually now prefer the taste of the diet coke, maybe it is the thought of the sugar in the other one.

There are some downsides to Diet Coke. There are many horror stories about the ingredients used and it has even been linked to cancer. It is also obviously not great for you if you drink a lot of it every day which programmes like Supersize Vs Superskinny and 10 years Younger have shown. As with most fizzy drinks it can give you a bit of a stomachache and can also make you bloated.

Diet Coke varies in price according to where you are but cans are usually around 50p and large bottles between £1-2. A glass in a pub can vary widely.

Despite the downsides to Diet Coke, I really like the taste and find it a great treat when on a diet.
