Infogrames'Digimon Worldgiving PlayStation owners the chance to play with little critters of their own. Sucked into the Digimon world, the player is given the usual task of saving everyone's hide. So off you travel, with your Digimon in tow, as you train it, feed it, encourage it, scold it and generally build it up in advance of battles ahead. Thus, the gameplay follows the pattern of exploring the game world, talking to its inhabitants and fighting off baddies where necessary. Sadly, whileDigimon Worldis graphically far superior to thePokémonseries on Game Boy, it's not as tight a game. Its momentum is severely hampered by the need to take part in prolonged conversations, which take far too long and leave you bashing at buttons simply to get back to the action. And when the fights do kick off, you'll find you're more an observer than anything else. With Nintendo never likely to permitPokémonto venture onto any other formats, it seems Play Station owners in need of their own Pocket Monsters have a very limited choice. As it stands,Digimon Worldis reasonable fun at first, and for younger, less demanding players, it has its merits. --Simon Brew

This is a review on a game back in the ages on the Playstation One called Digimon World (1997). Which was the first Digimon game ever and the first Digimon Role playing game. Digimon allows you to travel around in the Digital world of Digimon (digital monsters). The series could be classified as a basic rip off of the hit TV show Pokemon. Digimon pretty much has the same principles. The games on the other hand are completely different, while Pokemon games consist of following the rules of the TV show accept of the exception of which Pokemon you get. While Digimon World on the other hand is completely up to you, which path you choose will determine your destiny. This game is created by BAN DAI, and is an RPG which is for one to two players, there is the story mode, which is the main and where you will be able to determine your destiny and then there is battle which is where you will be able to battle a friend, but will require two memory cards with two files which is a nuisance, or you won't be able to battle each other, but you don't get this game for that, you get it for the kick ass story and the entertainment this game will bring to you. But as some of you may like the idea of battling each other, which is pretty good fun, but the actual game is better, when you battle, it will be just like battling in the story, by telling your Digimon commands, and depending how good your digimon is, is depending on whom will be victorious.
Background History
Digimon is a TV show mainly for kids, as how popular Pokemon became, they decided to create another program called Digimon, short for Digital Monsters. The show consisted of seven kids, all friends and from the same school, they all end up going to this campsite (school trip) and end up getting transported into a different dimension (the Digital World). Once there they end up meeting strange monsters that can talk to them, and they called themselves Digimon. From then, they get into wacky situations, and end up for a struggle of trying to get home, and how they got to the Digital World in the first place. The TV series has 3 - 4 series now (not interested enough to keep count), and is still running.
Well as for this game (Digimon World) you choose your character (which you create), what you are able to edit it his name, then you choose what time of day you prefer, day or night, depending what you choose is depending what Digimon you end up with. When you have created your character, you are talked through how to play the game, like a tutorial, and you learn what to do, and how to use items, make your digimon happy, and make your digimon poop, and how to make your digimon sleep, and what the signs above your digimon mean. Once done through this, then you may explore anywhere, but as normal games go, you are only allowed so far at this stage of the game.
The Digimon City
Digimon City, the local city for nearby Digimon, bit deserted at the moment, but that is where you step in, your mission is to bring more digimon to the city, fueled by loads of side-quests also. Each time you fight a proper boss Digimon, like Argumon (Tai's digimon in the series), if you win the fight, he will relies who you are, and that there is a city for digimon near by, when he leaves the screen, head back to the city, and you will see there is a new place you can go to, the Bank is opened, so getting digimon back to the city means the city will grow bigger. Each digimon you bring back gives you a different thing, like some open a shop so you can buy food for your digimon, one will open like a hospital, so can heal your digimon from flue or whatever illness your digimon may have. This makes this game pretty good itself, as it is nice to see the city is blossoming and becoming better and is good for you too, as you will be able to get more.
Training Ground
This is where you can train up your Digimon, as at the start, your digimon is pretty weak and tame, so you will want to go here before you go out into the wild. The training ground has loads of things you can do to make your digimon better and learn new techniques, but make sure you give him regular rests, and trips to the toilet, as if your digimon is tired, he will disobey you, and you do not want that, also if your digimon poops on the ground and not in a freaky square hole toilet, your digimon will start to get angry, so make sure you do regular trips. The training ground allows you to increase your digimon's strength, agility, defense, mind, and lots more. Each attribute is an asset to you, so you will want to do a lot of them all. To train, you will need to go up to the training equipment there, and either do normal (which will give you the basic amount of stats) or bonus (which will give you a chance to double the normal stats). The more training you do the better your digimon will be, but the sleepier he will become, so make sure you don't over do the training in one go.
Digi-Evolution
When so many days pass, and depending on the stats of your Digimon, your Digimon will evolve into a stronger monster, depending on how you treat your digimon, is depending on what digimon it evolves in to. You do not want to get the slimy garbage one, that eats poop and does very little attack, so train your digimon lots, and give it a lot of caring. Once your digimon has evolved once, it will be able to evolve again, and again, till it gets to the mega stage. There are different forms of Digimon, your digimon starts at the Rookie level, then goes to Champion level, then Ultimate level. then Mega level (best form). You will see digimon around in the city that are in the Training level (before Rookie), which don't attack.
The Wild
Once you think your digimon is ready to face the wilderness, and then you will want to begin your search for digimon to come to the digimon city. You will encounter basic digimon which will be roaming around the place, if you bump into them, then battle commences. When you are in battle, you stand on the side lines while your digimon battles, if you have not trained your Digimon's mind at all, then you won't be able to help him in battle accept give him food to heal, or chips (microchips) to revive him. But if you have trained his mind, and learned some skills, you will be able to tell him to attack, defend, and run away etc by shouting it on the game. When you have won the battle, you will gain stats from the fight, but the Training ground is always best for training. There are loads of places you will be able to explore and search for digimon to join the Digimon City. You will know which Digimon will be able to come to the city, as there will be a speech thing before the battle, and will be in the form of a boss. Sometimes you will have to do certain things to trigger a fight with digimon that can join the city, like by talking to them so many times, giving them items etc. But watch out the fights in this game is pretty hard if you have not prepared for them.
My Opinion
I thought this game was pretty good, it has brought me hours of fun, the noises in it can be a bit annoying, and the soundtrack is a bit tedious, but other then that it is a pretty decent game all round. Considering it is on the PSX, it is still good compared to the newer games, and I too still play this game if you can believe that, as the story can be different each time you play it, when you complete it (if you manage to from this massive game) you will be able to play it again without having repetitiveness happening, which is great. I did enjoy this game, I have had lots of fun with it, and my mates have had loads of fun also, it has great playability, and is really worth playing for all RPG / Digimon / Raising fans. The game is very addictive, when you get absorbed, there is no going back. As there are just so many things you can do on this game, so many side quests, and loads of digimon to find makes this very addictive and a lot of fun to play. The game is very original, it is the first of its type, and as it was newly done, it could have been rubbish, but it turned out to be very good style of game-play, and is very good to play. The graphics are not bad, considering it is on the Playstation one, where graphics could not be so good, but it does look good in it's 3D atmosphere, and the detail in some places, does make this pretty good, but don't let the graphics make you have second thoughts about this game, the story is very good, and the game-play is great fun too. The background music is not particularly good, it stops at night time, where you will hear animal noises, but the game is good from the changing from the night and day, which makes this game even better, but shame the music and the sound effects are a bit of a downer, and can be annoying, but once you have gotten use to it, it is a cracking good game. There also are no voices in this game as the Playstation one could not allow voices in the games. The game is pretty difficult throughout, it is not one of those games that are easy, if you train too much, your digimon will digivolve into a rubbish monster, which you don't want, but if you train too less, you will not be able to defeat anything. But if you keep at the game, you will soon find the game getting easier, but it can be pretty easy at the start depending on your strategy. This game is great value, should be purchased if you find it cheap, don't be fooled by it being a Digimon game which naturally makes it a game for only 4 year olds, well no, this is good for adults, and I would not recommend this game to anyone under the age of 10, mainly because of how complicated it is, even though it is rated 3+, it is a certainly difficult game for young kids. I give this game 5 star * * * * *, as I did enjoy it a lot, it has brought me a lot of fun, and is very good in general, worth purchasing if you are an RPG fan or a fan of the series.

It's a spinoff of the original Digimon - a pocket console along the lines of Tamagotchi which allowed the user to hatch, raise and battle a digital monster.
