Promisses much, delivers little
Review of Olympus SP-570 UZ by
piloteer81
Advantages: long zoom, high resolution
Disadvantages: fails to deliver and very dissapointing
...in compact cameras like the Olympus SP-570 UZ, a certain amount of quality is lost in the image. But with the 12x Zoom on my Sony, this was hardly noticable and more than compensated with by the increased versatility.
However, the above is not true of the OlympusSP-570 UZ. In short I found the pictures to be soft and lacking depth. Even side by side with my Sony H2 which is a two year old camera, both at auto settings, the H2 won hands down.
It ... ...likes of the Olympus 410 costing less than the 570, it's even more difficult to justify choosing the Olympus 570 over a low end DSLR. If the Olympus was £75 cheaper it might be easier to recommend but there are plenty of bridge cameras out there that perform equally well. ...

A reasonable compromise
Review of Olympus SP-560 UZ by
Essan
Advantages: Robust, plenty of features
Disadvantages: Focusing problems, complicated
...helps if you've owned similar Olympus cameras - and this tends to mean it's not really a quick, one handed operating camera.
But, what do you expect from a camera that does everything except make the tea (and it may even do that - to be honest after several months of ownership I still haven't worked out what half the functions are! I'm sure face detection is useful for taking 'social pictures' but as I never do so, I've yet to have the opportunity ... ...someone with prior experience of Olympus cameras, and wanting something better then most digital compacts, but cheaper, lighter and perhaps less complex than an SLR, the SP650uz may well be a good option. However, the similar Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 has a better lens, and new models are constantly appearing on the market: I wouldn't recommend paying full retail price for this camera, but if you can pick it up at a discount it's worth grabbing, even ...

Olympus sp510 - Great Prosumer Camera
Review of Olympus SP-510 UZ by
reviewerKing
Advantages: Lots of features for the money, Easy to use but with access to advanced features
Disadvantages: Noise at high ISO's
In terms of value and features for money, the sp510 is probably the best camera in its class.
Ideal for someone looking to do more than just snapshots, but not wanting to fork out hundreds on a digital SLR, the sp510 is a so called bridge or prosumer camera that attempts to offer the best of both worlds.
For example the camera has a number of modes from fully automatic - where the camera takes care of all settings, you just frame your shot and ... ...length, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
There are also a number of scene modes - with settings tailored to particular circumstances such as portraits, sports or night shots. Some of these are a little gimmicky, but the shoot and select mode, which takes a number of shots in quick succession and allows you to choose which ones to keep has proved useful for me.
Compared to other prosumer cameras the sp510 is cheap, yet its still well equipped. The ...

Olympus SP500UZ 10x zoom
Review of Olympus SP-500 UltraZoom by
mickle026
Advantages: versatile for all users
Disadvantages: autofocus not good on dark subjects
I actually bought a reconditioned factory second of this product for £120 from an auction site in 2007 (unused) - bargain!. The picture quality is very good to excellent for the average/business user. I have found it very handy, light weight for the size and very easy to use. I found the menus quite easy to follow and experiment with. One major downside is that the autofocus struggles on dark colours/lower light conditions. It has a vast array of ... ...find useful especially the different modes for different subjects/colour scenes. A novice will also find these useful, and having the 'everything' auto is especially useful for those users - and my partner! - dropped a few times, still works well, still use it weekly - robust! Good batteries last very well ...
