Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

I was more than a little surprised!

Advantages: Good looking, easy to use and very good image quality.
Disadvantages: A few minor things (see review)!

...well over 200 with the Casio EXILIM ZOOM EX-Z29, that I had been asked to put to the test and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with what this little camera could do. Firstly I have to say that the piano black version of the Casio EXILIM ZOOM EX-Z29 that I was given to work with is a stunning camera, it also comes in silver, pink blue and purple but it has to be the black one for me every time, the next thing of note is how robust the little ...
...harm in my eyes. Casio have gone with a few gimmicks like most companies do in their compacts at the moment, Casio have fitted this unit with the now very common face detection option which in compacts in general is a waste of time and I pretty much feel it is in this unit too, some DSLR`s make good use of this function but I have yet to find a compact that utilises it well. It also has the YouTube capture mode built in to the video function which ...

Pretty camera but not as pretty pictures

Advantages: comes in a lovely array of colours and a small beige leather case, good size
Disadvantages: picture quality, you have to fiddle around with the setting too much for a simple digi cam

I got quite a bargain with this camera. For some reason or other it had ended up on a reduced shelf in a shop - I think someone had returned it because there was a problem with the battery. I rescued it (for a small fee!), bought a cheap battery online and hey presto - new digital camera that didn't need sellotape to keep the battery compartment closed. So - what was my verdict.... Design Ok let's start with the outside aesthetic. This camera is ...
...nice face in attractive colours (mine is blue) and a large screen on the back. And mine came with a lovely little beige leather case. All in all quite girlie really! Ease of Use In some ways this camera is very easy to use - the buttons are an ok size for me (and i'm clumsy and have large fingers) but the menu's and some of the settings are hard to get to. It's not a very intuitive, user-friendly process. I can never remember how to get to the flash! ...

Best camera I've used

Advantages: Fast start up, quick time from photo to photo, amazing quality
Disadvantages: Screen freezes when focusing in

...me to looking at the Casio Exilim z1080, and since it fitted my £150 budget and appeared to be well worth the money I decided to look around for a good deal. I bought this camera for £79 at Comet which was well within my budget, and I'm not surpised as why they advertise it on their front page. I was a little worried at first as the price was well below the average for any entry level digital camera, but I was wrong for worrying. I purchased this ...
...So maybe a hint for Casio would be to create regional instruction manuals instead of trying to pass off just the one across the world.. But anyway this was pretty humourous so it doesn't let this camera lose any points.. With the C875 I was too used to waiting a few seconds for the thing to load up and be ready for picture taking, I was surprised when I first turned on the z1080 as the lens extended very fast, this camera loads up and is ready ...

My little Casio

Advantages: small, compact, quick start, superb image quality.
Disadvantages: videos can look shakey.

With a years use of this superb camera it is just fantastic. So easy to use my 7 year old grandson took great pictures. One click buttons for accessing playback and shoot modes. Best shot menus for shooting Landscape,Autumn leaves,Fireworks and Audio etc. I recorded the birds 'dawn chorus' with great success. Recording video however needs a very steady hand. Zoom function brilliant especially if you put it on a tripod to get the full digital zoom ...

Very cheap point and shoot that delivers surprisingly well

Advantages: cheap, very cheap,
Disadvantages: poor video, gimmicky features.

The price is what will draw most people in, as this thing is seriously cheap for what you get. For the small price, you get wonderful image stabilization to start. Works very well in low light. The face detection is also rather remarkable if you choose to use it. I prefer to focus/compose myself but i can still appreciate the technology in face recognition. Some people may like the "beauty shot" mode too. It essentially touches up human skin for ...
...of this, it just seems to take out the point of a photo. Its supposed to be realistic. But it may be a plus for some. VGA resolution video mode isnt too bad i guess. a nice addition. I have a hard time finding things to complain about at this price as you can tell! Quality piece of kit for the price minus the video mode. ...
