Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Excellent camera for intermediate - advanced users

Advantages: Well built, manual controls, fast, great screen
Disadvantages: Default shooting mode, movie mode, easy to drop

I don't actually own the camera but I have had privilege of using it non stop for the last 4 months around Europe. Amazingly my girlfriends uncle lent it to me for my travels after my cameras ($1600 AUD worth) decided it would be a good idea to jump out of the overhead compartment as soon as the plane landed in Heathrow Airport and take themselves for a fast paced walk down the isle. Needless to say it took every ounce of my male ego to stop myself ...
...I stray from the point. This is a great little camera for anyone that is making the jump from a point and shoot to a SLR but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone not willing to play around with the advanced settings. The stats 8MP 3 x Optical Zoom 2.5 inch LCD screen An unbelievable 34 scene modes White LED AF Assist Lamp Fast start up time Appearance Slim, simple, stylish but a little on the heavy side is about how I would describe this ...

Brilliant Little Compact

Advantages: Large Screen,Loads of Features,Very Durable,Excellent Battery
Disadvantages: Digital zoom not very good, but 3x optical tends to be enough

A brilliant little compact, I've had mine for about 2 years now it has a good size screen, loads of features, many of which I am yet to use!! and its very durable - I've carried it round in my back pocket with no case many a time and never had any trouble with it. A very nice feature is the best shot mode which has nearly 30 pre - loaded shooting scenarios such as scenery, portrait, party, candle light etc by selecting one of these modes you are ...
...and you can also add your own modes to the pre - loaded ones, not that I have ever felt the need. There is also a snapshot mode which just takes a really standard picture, and a manual exposure setting. You can also take video with this camera (you will need a decent size memory card if you want to take a lot) and the quality of this is actually really good, I don't use this feature anymore as I have purchased a video camera now, but in the first ...

Very cheap point and shoot that delivers surprisingly well

Advantages: cheap, very cheap,
Disadvantages: poor video, gimmicky features.

The price is what will draw most people in, as this thing is seriously cheap for what you get. For the small price, you get wonderful image stabilization to start. Works very well in low light. The face detection is also rather remarkable if you choose to use it. I prefer to focus/compose myself but i can still appreciate the technology in face recognition. Some people may like the "beauty shot" mode too. It essentially touches up human skin for ...
...of this, it just seems to take out the point of a photo. Its supposed to be realistic. But it may be a plus for some. VGA resolution video mode isnt too bad i guess. a nice addition. I have a hard time finding things to complain about at this price as you can tell! Quality piece of kit for the price minus the video mode. ...

Good point and shoot for the money.

Advantages: Cheap quality compact
Disadvantages: poor macro mode

It seems like a quality camera when you first pick it up. Solidly made. The 12 megapixels enable you to crop your photo nicely without losing out on size if the need arises. Image quality is very good. Bright vibrant photos with excellent color distribution. The only fault i've found is that the macro function is terrible. Cosmetically its a gorgeous little camera as you can see, especially in the colors. The 3 times optical zoom is quite powerful ...
...for most situations anyone with a point and shoot will need it for. To summarize, great little camera so long as you arent interested in the macro side of things, it fails dismally there. Did i mention the image stabilization is EXCELLENT. As is the face detection. Its just a shame about the macro. ...
