Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Pretty camera but not as pretty pictures

Advantages: comes in a lovely array of colours and a small beige leather case, good size
Disadvantages: picture quality, you have to fiddle around with the setting too much for a simple digi cam

I got quite a bargain with this camera. For some reason or other it had ended up on a reduced shelf in a shop - I think someone had returned it because there was a problem with the battery. I rescued it (for a small fee!), bought a cheap battery online and hey presto - new digital camera that didn't need sellotape to keep the battery compartment closed. So - what was my verdict.... Design Ok let's start with the outside aesthetic. This camera is ...
...nice face in attractive colours (mine is blue) and a large screen on the back. And mine came with a lovely little beige leather case. All in all quite girlie really! Ease of Use In some ways this camera is very easy to use - the buttons are an ok size for me (and i'm clumsy and have large fingers) but the menu's and some of the settings are hard to get to. It's not a very intuitive, user-friendly process. I can never remember how to get to the flash! ...

My little Casio

Advantages: small, compact, quick start, superb image quality.
Disadvantages: videos can look shakey.

With a years use of this superb camera it is just fantastic. So easy to use my 7 year old grandson took great pictures. One click buttons for accessing playback and shoot modes. Best shot menus for shooting Landscape,Autumn leaves,Fireworks and Audio etc. I recorded the birds 'dawn chorus' with great success. Recording video however needs a very steady hand. Zoom function brilliant especially if you put it on a tripod to get the full digital zoom ...

Size is important but width isn't everything!!

Advantages: lightweight, slim, easy to use, great pictures, impressive zoom, long battery life
Disadvantages: instructions were in Japanese

...time I look at the Casio Exilim EX-V7 I've had for 2 weeks. I look at it and think about the gas powered calculator I had at school that needed four heavily set blokes to move it because of its size and weight. Launched in Vegas (baby) in January with much fanfare in the camera press I just had to get my grubby little paws on one, and when I entered a few (17) competitions to win one I was shocked when I got a text message to say that yes Mr Westonsi, ...
...really that thin but the Casio Exilim EX-V7 goes to show that size really does not matter as it is the best thing I've had my hands on for months (my wife has just given birth so no action for a while). The controls are very basic and in a nutshell it can do two things. Take pictures and record video clips. There are about 8-9 diffrent types of photos to take with shadowing and shading all of which produce a stunning amount of detail. The camera ...

I <3 my Casio Exilim EX-Z700

Advantages: Battery life, picture quality, easy and quick to use, many features, reliable.
Disadvantages: Bright flash, large file sizes.

The Casio Exilim EX-Z700 is a fantastic camera with very few weaknesses. It is suitably compact and not noticeably heavy yet the screen size is not compromised; the LCD display is usefully large. In addition, the design of the zoom button is incredibly quick and easy to use as well as zooming long distances. There are many different 'best shot' styles including 'backlight' and 'monochrome'. Nevertheless using the automatic 'portrait' function produces ...
...easy to flick through the photos stored on the camera and with the flick of a button they are displayed on a calendar to show when they were taken. There are many settings to play around with on the menu, including self timers, sounds etc. Overall the camera is simple to use and rarely needs referal to the instructions. The battery life is fantastic and once charged using the cradle that connects to the mains, I rarely find that the battery is low ...

Casio Exilim EX-S770 - Poor camera quality, overpriced

Advantages: Nice design
Disadvantages: Bad photo quality, overpriced

I'm afraid to say there aren't many positive things I can say about this camera and I wish I'd never bought it. The nicest thing about it though is the design, which is one of the first things that attracted me to it. It's very slim and stylish and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It looks like it should be a good camera, but the descriptions, images and reviews of it are very deceiving. Considering the high price of this camera, the ...
...is capable of taking better photographs than this camera. There is no point in macro being on this camera, because you have to be so far away from the object before it focuses that it isn't even considered a macro shot anymore. The photos rarely come out sharp and I've never taken a photo I've liked on this camera. I know it's not supposed to be an SLR or a top of the range digital camera, but there are far cheaper cameras that'd take better acceptable ...
