Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Awesome Canon Camera!

Advantages: Sim design, Good picture quality, light weight
Disadvantages: not a great variety of colors to choose from.

I love this camera! I got it a month ago and I take it anywhere. It is really light weight and takes really good pictures. I personally recommend it. You get what you expect for it's price. I really wish they would make them in other brighter and more fun colors so they would be more attractive. The resulting pictures are really good quality to just keep in your computer or to print out as well. It is really easy to get use to and doesn't reaquire ...

Lumix DMC FS6

Advantages: To many to mention
Disadvantages: None that come to mind.

This camera is wicked. Very simple to use . With built in face detector it makes taking good photo's childs play. It has a fantastic zoom and unlike some camera's the use of the full zoom doesn't blur when a picture is taken. The camera's applications include a really cool charger . So unlike most camera's there's no buying batteries , you simply remove the battery from the camera and charge which generally takes around 1hr . You also have a choice ...

easy, little wondercamera

Advantages: exposure, easy to use!
Disadvantages: no stabalizer, uses lots of batteries if you keep your flash on!

I have this camera now more then 3 years and must say it's a good buy. Although there isn't any stabilizer in the cam so keep him very still while shooting (using the 2second timer can help to avoid the push button movements). Also the different settings are nice! I used a exposure of 2 seconds (on a tripod) at night to capture a great picture! (can be seen at http://family.webshots.com/photo/2483842630027869867lOeqQD look at the camera data on the ...
...nice to use! The anti-red eye flash does what it's meant for. A good buy for anyone who likes to take an easy picture. But don't forget to take good batteries (lithium batteries are the best and strongest for this one) also a big SD card can make the access to the files a bit slower ...

Canon Powershot - Above Average

Advantages: Nice for a small camera, Good settings, Nice overall camera
Disadvantages: Noise @ Low light, Batterys recognised as empty

...is quite seamless, Canon have done a good job at designing this camera, it boasts as a camera that is compact enough for a pocket and also has the usability of a bridge camera, the small bump on the left gives you great grip and gives space for two AA batteries, very standardized and easy to change, i believe it can take both XD and SD i am sure it will hold up to a 4GB SD Canon have slapped quite a price tag on it, and the price doesent seem to ...
...sensor is the most any none professional will ever need and it is worth paying 100 - 120 pounds for, after a while using this camera i have found flaws, without using the "battery discharge" setting to discharge the batteries it can confuse the camera, occasionally a new set of batteries will be recognize as empty this is a problem which is pointed out in the manual quite clearly and batteries should be well discharged, personally i loved this camera ...

An excellent camera with a great zoom

Advantages: Easy to use; lightweight; excellent picture quality
Disadvantages: Lack of viewfinder

I purchased this camera in February 2009 at a discounted price of £149.99 from Currys, ahead of the release of the new TZ6 and TZ7. It is my first digital camera and my first camera of any type for about 15 years! I had considered waiting for the release of the new models, but then decided that they would be sold at a much higher price anyway. I also wondered about getting the TZ5, but couldn't justify the extra cost for a couple of extra features. ...
...delighted with this purchase. It is extremely easy to use, i.e. I didn't need to read the manual, although I'm now doing that to learn some of the more advanced features. The quality of the photographs I have taken has been excellent. My only criticism is the lack of viewfinder (although I'm getting used to that now, apart from in very sunny conditions). ...
