Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Cheap and cheerful

Advantages: Cheap, came with goodies, doubles as webcam and data storage medium
Disadvantages: Image quality not good

Bought camera from Lidls's for around £80. The package included quite a few goodies such as batteries, charger, plastic table tripod and some image editting software but I was disappointed in the quality of pictures produced. Maybe it is because of the size of the aperture or the quality of the lens but pictures taken in good light are slightly fuzzy and those taken in poorish light, even with flash, are just not acceptable. The flash "whites out" ...
...and robustness seem to be OK but it looks rather cheap. Well, it was cheap, i guess. Before this camera I had an Agfa e307 for several years. Even now, although it only produces images of 640x480 pixels, it knocks spots of the Mega3 for picture quality. Sorry, Aiptek. On the plus side, it doubles as a webcam, a data storage medium and a small movie camera. ...

My Nice Horrible Little Camera

Advantages: Small + compact, cheap, over an hour of high quality digital video (with 512 mb CF card)
Disadvantages: Doesnt focus automatically, small screen, annyoing volume that you cannot turn down!, seems fragile

...your computer. Another feature Aiptek have forgotten to put on is the Flash. This is really annoying because if your not in broad daylight you cant take good pictures! Overall, the camera has hardly any features. It is a good bog-standard digital camera which takes good quality pictures and videos if you can be bothered to focus it (which i cant!). I would advise that you fork out the extra cash for a better camera. Charles ...

An excellent digital camcorder

Advantages: ideal for beginner and intermediate "cameramen"/"camerawomen"
Disadvantages: picture quality not as good as others

Me and my friends were looking for a digital camcorder which wasn’t too expensive and had a decent quality picture, so we searched the net and found this one, it wasn't too expensive and the picture quality wasn't blurred so I bought this camera and a compact flash card to boost the memory both of these only came to just under £100 which I thought was a reasonable prise. The camera came with the batteries it needed and the camera also has the plug ...
...could start recording for the second I got it and I could get the clips off with out installing the software first. The camera is easy to use but to get the shot in good focus requires the back light on the screen to be on which eats the batteries very quickly but apart from that I have had no regrets about buying this camera and I would recommend it to and body. ...

Digital World - Let's go camera crazy!

Advantages: Small, light and compact
Disadvantages: doesn't have a flash

I was given the Pencam Compact for christmas one year and have enjoyed many moments of crazy photo taking! The pencam is so small and efficient, you could fit it in your handbag or in your pocket easily and what's more you can take it absolutely anywhere. You can use the pencam as a digital camera, digital camcorder or a pc camera. It is ideal for taking pictures to send over the Internet, for example, taking pictures of products on ebay, or just ...
...Compact - The new lighter, smaller, smarter pencam. It comes with an installation guide, two c.d's (application software and video studio), usb power cable to connect up to your computer, device to hang the camera round your neck, and a stand to place it in when not in use. The built in memory of the camera is 64 Mbit memory. It supports two kinds of resolution - high resolution (640x480 VGA) for 26 pictures and low resolution (320x240 QVGA) for ...

Small, but not quite perfectly formed

Advantages: small, easy to use
Disadvantages: design

I have been using this camera as a pocket camera to catch shots I might otherwise miss for about a year now. It fill the role almost perfectly, so long as you do not require high definition pictures, but then what do you expect for the price? It is small, easy to use, has a macro facility down to 50cm and the software is adequate (you can always use a high power photo package of your own). It has also stood up to some fairly rough treatment including ...
...one quibble is the design. I find that I regularly get a knuckle on the photos - and yes it is mine! Overall, I would recommend this camera as a cheap stand by for general use. PS My computer wallpaper is a shot I took with this camera on the Isle of Skye. ...
