Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Canon Powershot - Above Average

Advantages: Nice for a small camera, Good settings, Nice overall camera
Disadvantages: Noise @ Low light, Batterys recognised as empty

...is quite seamless, Canon have done a good job at designing this camera, it boasts as a camera that is compact enough for a pocket and also has the usability of a bridge camera, the small bump on the left gives you great grip and gives space for two AA batteries, very standardized and easy to change, i believe it can take both XD and SD i am sure it will hold up to a 4GB SD Canon have slapped quite a price tag on it, and the price doesent seem to ...
...sensor is the most any none professional will ever need and it is worth paying 100 - 120 pounds for, after a while using this camera i have found flaws, without using the "battery discharge" setting to discharge the batteries it can confuse the camera, occasionally a new set of batteries will be recognize as empty this is a problem which is pointed out in the manual quite clearly and batteries should be well discharged, personally i loved this camera ...

Awesome Canon Camera!

Advantages: Sim design, Good picture quality, light weight
Disadvantages: not a great variety of colors to choose from.

I love this camera! I got it a month ago and I take it anywhere. It is really light weight and takes really good pictures. I personally recommend it. You get what you expect for it's price. I really wish they would make them in other brighter and more fun colors so they would be more attractive. The resulting pictures are really good quality to just keep in your computer or to print out as well. It is really easy to get use to and doesn't reaquire ...

Canon Powershot G10, a step forward in Photography.

Advantages: Everything from the casing to the image quality.
Disadvantages: It's too good.

This is by far the best camera I've owned in a while, to be honest I went in looking to purchase a G9 but I was told they wasn't in production anymore so I thought what the heck G10 here I come :) After the shocking service from Currys.Digital I got the bus home with my camera excited as ever after a customer in the shop actually stood there and told me about how good it is when he purchased one. Got home, opened it up in joy, the battery actually ...
...minutes before I decided to give it a good charge. Fully charged, fully excited I took it out for a play as soon as possible, let me tell you this thing is amazing. I can't describe how good it is. Everything from fully auto to fully manual, it's just awesome from the ease of use right to the actual image. I even dropped mine in the brook =$ still worked!! Seriously reccommend this product! ...

Canon IXUS 95 IS: The best amateur digital camera on the market

Advantages: Very high quality pictures for both print and web work.
Disadvantages: The bundled software that comes with it has a very Fisherprice feel about it.

After reading many reviews on Amazon and amateur camera sites about the different types of hobbyist level digital cameras, I decided to buy one of these. The camera itself has a metal casing and so has a sleek feel and look to it. It's very light weight and compact making it very easy to carry around in a handbag or while, (and most importantly) taking pictures! I found that it took only 5 - 10 minutes to get the camera working from out of the box. ...
...of the manual. When starting up the camera, it isn't slow like they digital cameras of yesteryear. Its ability to capture anything in an instant is one of it's many advantages. The photos it and you produce are very high quality, as I found out the other day when I had some printed off at home. The only downside is the bundled software which comes with the camera - It's awful! Everything is so huge on it and hasn't been designed at all that well. ...

Yes, I Love Canon Powershot A480 !

Advantages: small, light, great pictures, easy to use, attractive, super cheap
Disadvantages: low battery power, lens-error

...always been a fan of Canon digital cameras. Before i use Canon for personal digital camera, i had used Sony for several years until my friend introduced me to Canon IXUS which takes amazing pictures. And since that, i have never gone back to Sony. As we all know Canon digital cameras capture great pictures and very easy to use. When I first found Canon Powershot A480 [the red one] on the internet, i found it very cheap among the other digital cameras. ...
...weeks later my beautiful red Canon Powershot A480 was delivered to my home. First thing I saw when I opened the box is it is small and beautiful, I also happy that it is very light, 140gr without the batteries. So i began to use it and i was pretty satisfied with the captured pictures. It was very easy to learn, i don't even read the instruction! The modes are easy and it doesn't take blurry pictures. You get beautiful pictures even when you are ...
