Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

A fantastically small yet versatile camera

Advantages: Tiny and lightweight but good build quality. Easy to use, fast startup, very clear LCD.
Disadvantages: Poor outdoor light handling, slow shutter speed, no macro feature and no case.

...while ago I bought the Casio EXILIM EX-S2 because I wanted a camera which I could literally slip in my pocket and yet have good enough pictures to print or view online. I've got a decent SLR and so I wasn't looking for a very high resolution or optical zoom. Size and convenience where prioritise over quality in my selection process. Once the camera arrived it was clear that all my expectations had been met. It's absolutely tiny, and I've found myself ...
...optical zoom, such as the Casio EXILIM EX-Z50 or the Canon Ixus 430 (expect to add £100 to the price though). But if you already own a good camera for those occasions when you really need the best quality, and want something economical for everyday use then the EX-S2 is the perfect product. I bought my camera for £150 from pixmania.co.uk about 18 months ago, although I'm sure you could get a lot more mega-pixels for the same price today! ---------------------------------------------------------------- ...

Exilim EX-S600

Advantages: Good Picture Quality, Takes Video
Disadvantages: Looses charge easily

I have owned this camera since recieving it as a gift 2 years ago and have loved it since! The camera itself is easy on the eyes, its a nice chrome silver and size wise, it fits perfectly in any small pocket / case. The most important thing, picture quiality, does not disappoint either. It has a 3x optical zoom which is plenty to provide high quality pictures. It needs to additional software to load pictures onto computer. Just plug in the cable ...
...The charger is again very simple and acts a docking station also for the camera. The battery life is very good, only small problem is it appears to loose charge if not used for a while. If it is put away fully charged and not used for a few weeks, it will need recharging before it can be used again. The camera takes most SD cards also allowing its memory to be extended however large you would like. It can also do video. Up to 30mins of footage can ...

Very sturdy little camera with good features

Advantages: Build quality, picture quality, features, battery life
Disadvantages: doesn't ship with memory card

I bought this camera a long time ago because I wanted something fairly small to carry around as my new PDA didn't have a camera built in, I was in a shop for something else and saw behind the paypoint that it was reduced so i had a look..... I was impressed, metal casing, quite slim and unobtrusive in the pocket, 2 rechargeable batteries and charger included, I was a little suprised at the lack of memory card but hey I wasnt going to let the lack ...
...the surface appeared to be a very good bargain. I was instantly pleased by the solid feel of the camera in the hand, it felt like it could withstand a few knocks.... and it would need to, I'm a teenager :P (god knows how many times i've dropped the thing onto concrete floors, it still works though ) Its solid without being a brick, and slender without feeling like it will snap, a very well designed piece of kit :) The camera itself in automatic ...

A compact easy to use camera with lasting power

Advantages: Long battery life, easy to navigate, quick access to features and picture adjustments
Disadvantages: Can't use any other Casio Exilim camera dock to charge this model. Dock had a fault after 2 years and had to be replaced.

...which isn't very accessible for Casio camera fans. Complaints aside, even this 3.2 Megapixel model takes some good quality photos with good definition and excellent colour. The Best Shot setting is great for quickly adjusting the type of picture to be taken and more detailed adjustments can be made to the lighting etc in the menu. The generously sized display screen is a great help when reviewing the pictures taken and I think this is one of the ...
