Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Best camera I've used

Advantages: Fast start up, quick time from photo to photo, amazing quality
Disadvantages: Screen freezes when focusing in

...me to looking at the Casio Exilim z1080, and since it fitted my £150 budget and appeared to be well worth the money I decided to look around for a good deal. I bought this camera for £79 at Comet which was well within my budget, and I'm not surpised as why they advertise it on their front page. I was a little worried at first as the price was well below the average for any entry level digital camera, but I was wrong for worrying. I purchased this ...
...So maybe a hint for Casio would be to create regional instruction manuals instead of trying to pass off just the one across the world.. But anyway this was pretty humourous so it doesn't let this camera lose any points.. With the C875 I was too used to waiting a few seconds for the thing to load up and be ready for picture taking, I was surprised when I first turned on the z1080 as the lens extended very fast, this camera loads up and is ready ...

Great images,stability and features!

Advantages: Image quality, screen size, compatibe with multiple formats
Disadvantages: nothing so far...

I've recently bought one of these and found it to be superb value for money mid range companct camera. I got mine from www.webelectricals.co.uk who also delivered it for free. The optical zoom is good but the quality of larger prints really shows from the 8.1 Mega Pixels. If you only print standard size shots then you might not notice however with larger ones you can really capture the granular detail. The screen is a good size and is certainly ...

Casio Ex-Z10

Advantages: great pictures, easy to use, but also customisable
Disadvantages: digital zoom is grainy

From my experience, this camera provides excellent value for money. It may not be as thin and flashy as the newer models, but it provides all the functions you'd expect from a camera from a respected brand. It has an easy photo mode, which allows you to start taking pictures straight away, without having to worry about any of the settings...or for those have have more time on their hands, it allows the settings to be manually adjusted, such as aperture, ...
...to say about this camera is that when zooming in to the maximum amount, it sometimes does not focus as well, and the digital zoom makes the pictures blurry...but I think this will be the same from any digital camera. On that note though, it takes amazing close up photos. Overall, I think this is a great camera, and it takes good photos too! ...

Very cheap point and shoot that delivers surprisingly well

Advantages: cheap, very cheap,
Disadvantages: poor video, gimmicky features.

The price is what will draw most people in, as this thing is seriously cheap for what you get. For the small price, you get wonderful image stabilization to start. Works very well in low light. The face detection is also rather remarkable if you choose to use it. I prefer to focus/compose myself but i can still appreciate the technology in face recognition. Some people may like the "beauty shot" mode too. It essentially touches up human skin for ...
...of this, it just seems to take out the point of a photo. Its supposed to be realistic. But it may be a plus for some. VGA resolution video mode isnt too bad i guess. a nice addition. I have a hard time finding things to complain about at this price as you can tell! Quality piece of kit for the price minus the video mode. ...
