Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Really pleased

Advantages: quality prints
Disadvantages: quite bulky

...If you have an Epson Stylus printer you can create a direct link between the two but I've not tried that yet. I have been very pleased with the software which comes with it. It was very simple to set up and it was very easy to download pics on to the computer. It is quite bulky in comparison to most other digital cameras but it takes normal AA batteries so that's a bonus. I bought recharable batteries so I'm not constantly forking out for new batteries. ...

Good to Go

Advantages: Stills and Video camera functions - can also be used as a webcam.
Disadvantages: Basic point and shoot functionality.

This camera also doubles as a basic video camera! Using the video out lead, you can view and record moving images to video, or use as a webcam with your PC. The range is limited by the length of the lead though. As a first digital camera, or for a photographer with few expextations, this camera is ideal. The picture quality is good, and it is easy to use. The functionality is good and varied, and with an LCD screen to view shots before and after ...

Portable with good features but fragile

Disadvantages: Expensive and Weak Casing

OVERVIEW Epson 3000z seem to be the easiest to operate, full-featured digital camera. The camera is well designed and well implemented. But for me this camera is not a pocket camera, sure it is small with the size of 108 x 89 x 65 mm but the camera is a little chubby and the The shape and oversized handgrip for the right hand make it difficult to put in the camera to a small purse. With the 16MB CompactFlash memory card the camera can stores up ...

My reliable companion for 27 months now

Advantages: Good optical system, long battery life
Disadvantages: Only JPG files, just a 2.1 MPixel Camera

Epson is a not very popular make of digital cameras and I still don't understand why. So join me for a lesson in buying unpopular (and that means more cheap) products. ;-) I bought this 2.1 Megapixels camera in June of 2000 for about 450 Pounds, already knowing 3 Megapixel cameras are coming out right now, and so I won't get newest technology, but a well-designed and well-engineered digital camera. Getting started with this one was quite simple ...
...see ANY differences at all, Epson says it should be about 1900x1400 pixels) resolutions the camera offers: 1600x1200 pixels in high quality, 1600x1200 with "medium compression" and 640x480 pixels (VGA) in a high compression mode. Using the default 8 MB compact flash card this means about 15 pictures high quality, 30 medium quality and 150 in VGA. But I highly recommend the usage of a 64 MB compact flash card, as it's not very expensive no more and ...

quite a competent camera

Advantages: value for money, generally good picture quality, ease of use
Disadvantages: lack of manual controls for shutter speed etc, image quality in some circumstances can be poor (please read above)

I bought the epson photopc 750z in January 2000. Originally, I had my eye on the epson photopc 750z's big brother, the 850z. I had looked around extensively on the net for product reviews on digital camera's within my price range, and the 850z seemed to fit the bill, with regards to good picture quality reviews, and features. The only problem with the 850z was the price - at around £750, it was nearly going to break the bank! (and i wasn't sure ...
...digital camera) I was still trying to make my mind up until i came accross the 750z. A less feature packed version, and by all accounts nearly as capable in the image quality dept, which was my main consideration. The price of the 750z was the deciding factor...£299 in an online sale (as compared to a rrp of &550) Main features of camera: - 1.3 million pixel image quality (2 million with inbuilt "hypict" software) - optical zoom x2 - digital ...
