Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

HP Photosmart M737

Advantages: Ease of use
Disadvantages: none

This camera is very user friendly. There is a slide switch which you slide across depending on whether you want to take a picture, video or playback. The zoom (3x optical zoom) is also very good for taking pictures that are in the distance whilst keeping the details of the image. It has a large screen (6.35cm) to view and take pictures which is very convenient. It looks good and you will not be embarassed to take pictures with this camera. It takes ...
...well as a feature called adaptive lighting which gives you a better picture depending on your surroundings. Also there is a feature to add frames to your photos and to save them in black & white and sepia. Brillant value for money! There is nothing i dislike about this camera ...

Not a bad camera but not the best.

Advantages: high zoom and high quality standard pictures
Disadvantages: Batteries, up close work and plasticy casing.

...the spots off my older HP camera. The extra megapixels do make a difference. The camera menu is easy to navigate and the buttons that do the navigation are nice and simple to operate. The select or OK button is at the centre of the navigation and is very large so even people with big fingers can operate it with ease. The zoom button is L shaped so you cannot mistake which way the zoom lense is going. Talking of the lense, the 6X optical lense is ...
...of the camera to charge. HP do sell an "easy charge" kit for £20 but all the kit contains is a normal AA battery charger that you can buy for about £5 and a flimsy carry case. At least taking AA batteries it can easily be replaced when the batteries run out but i think they missed a big opening by not providing a battery that charges in camera. However, a set of batteries has a massive lifespan. Also included in the box is a driver CD for connecting ...

Class Camera

Advantages: Easy to use, good quality, light weight
Disadvantages: Can be slow

What can I say about this camera apart from great. I have been umming and arring about getting this nifty looking camera until I saw it in a shop on offer, so I jumped at the chance. When you open the box you are greeted to this trendy looking silver camera with is slim and lightweight. This camera is 6.2 mp with 3 optical zoom which has a 2.5" (6.4cm) good quality screen. You dont get a memory card with this camera but it does have 36 MB of internal ...
...buy a memory cards which start at about £10 - make sure they are SD cards ive just bought a 512MB SD fcard or £9.99 and this has now upped my total photos to 367. The software for your computer is very simple to install. Once you have taken your pictures there are different facilities to view them by pressing a simple button - you can either see them one at a time with you manually scrolling through them or you can opt to see them by slide show. ...

Value for money - Good for normal photography

Advantages: Good photo quality, easy to operate, Easy to download photos from this camera
Disadvantages: Digital display is not clear, Slow to start, video recording button and photo buttons are placed incorrectly

I own an hp320 since 2002. It a good value for your money. Fully automated. I find it very easy to operate. Good photo quality.. However, the video recording button and photo clicking buttons are placed very close to each other which I think is a bit inconvenient as many times I clicked the recording button when I was suppose to take a still picture. Video quality is OK. This camera does not record voice with the video. The digital display is not ...
...the object but still good enough for an amateur photographer. I think that the power consumption is a bit higher (It uses 4 AA size batteries!, compare SONY) One thing that I did not like about this camera is that this it takes somewhat longer to start. it looks better than average. Still there is a scope to make it look more contemprary. By and large a good product, especially, for people who want to buy an easy to operate camera at a very reasonable ...

why you shouldn't buy the HP PhotoSmart R927 !!!

Advantages: Large screen, good battery life, video setting
Disadvantages: Contant stalling - takes ages to save photos and regularly stalls forcing you to switch it off!

I bought the HP PhotoSmart R927 from Jessops a few years ago - at fist everything seemed fine - the camera took great quality photos and I liked the interface. However soon enough the camera began to stall. I have tried multiple SD cards - different brands and sizes bu the camera still regularly stalls. Every few photos that it takes the camera freezes and all you can do is remove the battery pack and replace it - however this often results in you ...
