Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Nikon Coolpix L5, Cool or uncool?

Advantages: 5X optical zoom and In-Camera red eye fix
Disadvantages: AA batteries, Poor sensitivity ISO 400

The Nikon L5 is a relatively new camera and at £132.76 looks like a great bargain, in some aspects it is great, but in other performace tests it has let me down. The overall design of the L5 is great, not to big or too small, so they have got the balance just right, but unfortunately it uses 2xAA batteries and with a 2.5" screen on the back lasts for only about 50-100 shots, noty really what you want when your on holiday and wanting to snap away, ...
...is incredbibly slow and the Nikon really does lack the performance side. The quality of prints I have received from the L5 are OK, slightly grainy and some colours were not that true., which i was amazed at as the camera's specification reads so well. The Nikon L5 also has a a technolocy called face-priority AF, which basically means will automatically focus on the face as a priority and the main focal point when needed. What Great technology and ...

Consider what you will use it for

Advantages: Superb picture quality, definition and colour
Disadvantages: Settings for extreme outdoor conditions but couldn't cope with the associated weather conditions

When we first purchased this camera we were thrilled with the picture quality. It's first outing was to the Swiss Alps and, whilst the complexity of the instruction manual left us grappling with taking pictures that were too high quality for the memory card to hold more than 15 pictures, once we had cracked the manual the pictures were fantastic. A particular strength of the camera is it's portrait settings which have resulted in some brilliant ...
...the final image. Outdoor scenic shots have also proven to be vivid. However, the existence of snow and similar outdoor settings implied it would be good for a Scottish mountaineering trip and we felt sorely let down by the result. The camera succumbed early on to temperatures that were above freezing (probably ca. 3 degrees) and gusting rain, despite being kept within a plastic bag inside the case and within the rucksac for the day, with the exception ...

Great camera for picturing Artwork.

Advantages: Small, light, hard-wearing
Disadvantages: a little expensive.

...my paintings. I purchased my Canon Digital IXUS 700 about 2 years ago, and have yet to find any faults with it. My photos are always exceptional, indoors and outdoors. It is easy to use and extremely easy to upload the photos on my computer, I just plug in the USB, press 2 buttons on the camera and it's done! I also find that the camera is very hard-wearing, I don't exactly take excellent care of it, I have lost count how many times I have dropped ...
