Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

...mega zoom lense. Its a great camera and quite simple to use. Its functions are quite straight forward and neatly presented giving a stylish uncluttered camera. But it does appear quite noisy in comparison to others alike and the battery life is not as long as you'd expect from such a modern camera. You will also notice that when deleting pictures, if you have a lot to delete it can be quite a slow process. It could be better but for its price this ...

This is an excellent camera that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. It was easy to use and the picture quality is outstanding. It is very reliable and durable. Kodak M863

Advantages: Good picture quality, LCD screen, versatility
Disadvantages: None!

...without further ado, here’s the Kodak M863. Lovely stuff. My particular version comes in a black matt finish with a strap to place around your wrist – being a bloke it was a far more obvious choice that the potential vivid pink option! Now, im hardly a connoisseur when it comes to digital cameras; the only other one I’ve previously owned was a ‘Premier’ one. (yep, never heard of them either!) But the first thing that strikes me about this camera ...
...back of the camera. With the camera being 8.2 mega-pixels; which is probably far too many to make any difference than, say, 6 mega-pixels would for day-to-day photos, it’s a very detailed photo you’re going to get at the end of it. But lets go into how exactly you get the photo you want. Well, firstly lets be pedantic – the ‘on’ button is on the top of the camera, next to the flash option which has the regular presets as on, off or depending on ...

Good but some bad points!!

Advantages: very easy to use with many different settings.
Disadvantages: does not work as good after a year of having it, also un-reliable

I recieved this camera as a gift and at first i was very happy with it, the camera i have is the black version not the silver. The camera is a little bit on the bulky side, but it has many good points!! firstly the camera is very easy to use, the camera comes with very good instructions but i found it alot easier to just fiddle around with it to find the ins and outs of the camera. The camera comes with a carry handle, a stand and the usb wire to ...
...very easy to connect to the computer you just turn the camera on then plug the wire into the camera then to your computer and straight away the camera is set up to your computer and it gives you the option to save the pictures to your computer or to save in individual files. once the camera is turned on it gives you mant different settings for the best results for each setting. for example theres a video setting to record both motion and sound, ...

Good for the Casual Snapper

Advantages: Easy to use. Nice photos. Very good value.
Disadvantages: Flash too bright. Video not good.

This camera is a little beauty! At under £100 of course the quality isnt as high as some of the more advanced and expensive peices of kit, but for an entry level digital camera, you can't go wrong with this one. It has 3x digital zoom and a generous 8.1 megapixel photo size. (The photos will fill memory card space very quickly!) The special close up focus is good, it keeps things sharp up to about an inch and a half away. The colours are vibrant ...
...my opinion, too bright. The video feature is not great, although this does not claim to be a video camera, its sound is rather fuzzy and the motion is stuttery and blurred. Overall, this camera is not in the same league as the SLRs but is very good for the casual snapper! ...
