Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Say Cheese !

Advantages: Small, Well Priced, Good Quality
Disadvantages: None

I've had a digital camera for quite a while now - a Fuji S300 (which I reviewed a little while ago) but my partner has wanted one for a while, one that is relatively small, light and easy to use. Last July I decided to take the plunge and get one for her birthday. After scouring the web and comparing endless specifications I decided to opt for the (Konika) Minolta Dimage E500 as it seemed to satisfy all of the criteria. It is a solidly built compact ...
...grams. For such a small camera it packs is quite feature packed - 5 million mega pixels and 3x optical zoom lens with 4x digital zoom on top of this. The camera was easy to set up, just pop in the 2 AA batteries supplied and the setup was complete (the camera has 12MB in built memory so no need to insert a memory card to at least try the camera). The camera is turned on by pressing a rather small and discrete button located on the top of the camera, ...

An excellent camera of good design and quality

Advantages: Clear Qualinty Images with good sound and video recording. Very sturdy construction.
Disadvantages: Rather heavy compared to later models, so Rechargeable batteries are a must for this thirsty camera.

It’s one of these cameras that are as complicated as you make them. You have to option of auto; point and shoot images. No messing about point the cameras at your subject and you’ve got yourself a nice holiday snap. But it you want to fiddle which the settings, the timing the light transparency focus exposure degree dishwasher thingy…. Then you can do that too. It’s probably as heavy as you expect a camera which as 4AA batteries inside to be. ...
...ones dry within hours. But rechargeable ones seem to last or weeks…. I can’t explain it but there we are. I’ve had this camera for about 2½ years now it’s never let me down. I think once upon a time it cost £400! It’s been a firm favourite ever since it’s release and consistently performs well against cameras of a much higher price. ...

...repaired.After some enquiries,i found that Minolta has a repair Service Centre in Milton Keynes. You can send the camera to them at your expense but as the situation was urgent i took the 45 minute drive to the Service Centre. The Staff were very friendly, but told me there was a 2 week wait for the repair.I explained my situation and they were happy to twist the rules for me,and i was able to pick up the Phone on our way up to Scotland for our Holiday.Included ...

I fully Recommend this Camera, ideal for Mid Price Users,it has all the Features that i need,is compact and light and most Importantly the Quality of Photographs is A1. I recently used the AOL Picture Service which will turn your Digital Pictures into Photographs to hold, rather than look at on the PC.I was able to choose ...

Pictue Perfect!

Advantages: Good price!
Disadvantages: Very low megapixels!

My husband bought me this camera 4 years ago as a christmas present - he bought it from argos for £99.99 with a 1year manufacturer warranty- and it is still going good and strong. I do not know how much it would retail at today - but I know it would be a lot less - when this was bought cameras were very expensive and this was a good price - but as technology has moved on - prices seem to have decreased! It is quite big for a digital camera (however ...

When you open the box, inside you find: *Camera *Carry case *USB cable *Video Cable *Manual *PC Software It is a silver camera with a resolution of 1.3MP, web cam capability (although never tried this out) and modes to capture still photos or video clips (still images are captured in a JPEG format) Turning the camera over, you will find a good sized colour LCD display screen, which shows what is viewed through the ...

Great camera

Advantages: Easy to use, good quality pictures
Disadvantages: Doesn't use normal batteries

...was very impressed with the Konica Minolta Dimage XG. The quality of the pictures is superb, almost like you aren't using a digital camera. The high quality is a substantial difference to the blurred and speckled pictures of so many other digital cameras. The quality alone is worth buying the camera. As a bit of a technophobe, this camera was fantastic for me. Whereas I'd prefer to use a point and shoot camera, this one was really easy to use. ...
...length), without help!! :-) The only downfall to this camera is the rechargable battery. Although lasting a great deal of time, the inability to use "ordinary" batteries means that a replacement battery in a hurry is not possible. The camera is a brilliant buy and I would recommend it to anyone. ...
