Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

The perfect backpackers camera

Advantages: Small enough to fit into your pocket but with a powerful zoom!
Disadvantages: must use specific battery

I purchased the original DMC-TZ1 when it first came onto the market a few years back and thought it was a great camera. But this one is even better! The 9.1mp makes for a good clear shot and the 12x optical zoom is amazing! Its the perfect camera for travelling - it can fit into your pocket or a going out bag ensuring you always have a camera to capture every moment. The zoom is the perfect added bonus. The only downside as I see it is the battery ...

Panasonic Lumix TZ6, Versatile compact with great image quality

Advantages: Fantastic little camera with 12 x zoom & 10.1MP (better than TZ5), but cheaper than TZ7
Disadvantages: No HD movie mode, not very cheap

The Panasonic Lumix TZ6 is a great little camera that I have used to compliment my large DSLR (a Nikon D90 I have also reviewed), which is too big and expensive to be taken everywhere. Specification The TZ6 is compact camera with 10.1 MP, which is plenty of pixels for all but the larger prints and harshest crops. This means that in normal conditions there will never be pixelation, in fact too many megapixels squashed onto a sensor can actually ...
...PowerShot SX200 IS), so the Panasonic Lumix TZ range pretty much has the market to itself. The TZ6 has the advantage over the TZ5 with and extra 1 megapixel and 2 x zoom, as well as a slightly different styling. As far as I have seen the TZ6 is not thatmuch more expensive than the TZ5, so I found it worth getting the newer model. The TZ7 is the most recent release in the series and is almost exactly the same as the TZ6 both with 10.1 MP and 12x zoom ...

Not perfect, but a very good camera

Advantages: Light. good automode or manual if you want, good lens, autofocus & anti-jitter, videoing
Disadvantages: No hotshoe, fixed LCD screen, full user guide on CD only.

A strong contender in the superzoom/prosumer/bridge class. Main advantages: * Lighter weight than most if not all rivals * Good "Intelligent Auto" mode which gives you a great "point and shoot" * Plenty of manual / semi-manual modes and scene options for those who like to fiddle * Fast autofocus * Good image stabilisation * Good Lens - 18x not 24x or 26x like some rivals, but 600mm instead of 480 isn't that important to me * Easy filming Weaknesses ...
...one which is common on this type * Intense light sources can spoil movies with lines - but apparently not unique for this type of filming, and if movies are important you should probably be getting a proper video camera anyway * No printed full user guide - supplied on CD instead, and written in the usual garbled English. * User Interface not quite good enough to make previous point irrelevant. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 - Next best thing to an SLR?

Advantages: Monstrous zoom, Intelligent Auto, Price
Disadvantages: None that occur

The Lumix FZ28 is an upgrade to the Lumix FZ18 and is almost identical on the surface. The LCD screen is now 2.7", compared with the 2.5" screen on the FZ18 and there is an extra switch on the back now to switch between Recording and Playback mode - which used to be handled via the mode-dial - a definite improvement in my opinion. I understand that not everyone will be upgrading from the earlier model so I will keep this comparison to a minimum from ...
...the same size as you would find on comparable models such as the Fuji FinePix S1500 or the Canon Powershot SX10 IS, but it is very bright and easy to see, even in sunlight - certainly easier than the Fuji. The appearance is SLR-like, as is the fashion with these super-zooms, and it feels reassuring to hold with its rubber-coated protruding grip. In terms of size and weight, it sits between the Fuji FinePix S1500 and the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS, measuring ...

Panasonic Lumix FS7

Advantages: Perfect picture
Disadvantages: None

...anyway. The Panasonic Lumix FS7 Digital camera comes in a range of different colours; it cost £130 which for a 10.1 Megapixel camera was pretty good and the deal we got meant that a free case came with it as well as an additional memory card. So there were no qualms on the price. 10.1 Megapixels Right away we was impressed with the quality of the images this camera was taking, I also test the pictures out on phones and cameras by taking one scenic ...
...I have seen the Panasonic Lumix for around £150 but I would advise that you look around for a good price as I have also seen it for as low as £120. The price includes not just the camera but also everything that you would need to get the camera working, including the charger and PC bits and bobs and my package also included a carrying pouch. Who’s it for Even though I have so far banged on about how great this camera is (it is) it is not suitable ...
