Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Good camera, terrible battery life.

Advantages: Large screen, good resolution, nice pictures
Disadvantages: Battery life insufficient to actually use the camera, waiting for the flash to charge up

The camera itself is nice, large, but mainly due to the screen size giving good visibility of the pictures. Photo quality is fantastic, good resolution and good pictures either night or day. The camera also has many useful features all of which are easy to access. HOWEVER The camera uses 2xAA batteries, the ones included last approximately 5-10 pictures. I used Energiser camera specific batteries, I managed about 15-20 pictures and 3 seconds ...
...have since then tried rechargeable batteries 2700 rated these too do not last. You even have to wait whilst the flash charges!! Overall a great camera, but appalling battery life. I have been told by the high street electrical store I got the camera from that the screen size will always flatten batteries and that the camera is perfectly OK. Suffice to say I now have an expensive shiny paperweight.. ...

Useful but not the best

Advantages: easy to use, good software
Disadvantages: the software takes up a little too much space, picture quality isn't that good.

I should've known that buying a digital camera at Wal Mart wasn't a very good idea to begin with, but I was short on money and they have very good prices. If you're in the market for a digital camera just to use for "casual" pictures, such as taking pictures of yourself or your friends, this camera is great for you. It comes with helpful image editing software, and pretty much everything you might need for a digital camera. Pro's: Flash, you can ...
...what resolution you want your pictures to be, and it has video. con's: It takes quite a while to upload pictures from your camera onto your computer. The flash doesn't always work, or it works then peters out after a few pictures. Although you can choose the resolution, the quality of the picture isn't that great unless you reduce the size of the picture after you upload it. All in all, this is a good camera for the amateur photographer. I wouldn't ...

Polaroid PDC 3035

Advantages: Really light, fairly good image quality.
Disadvantages: Not so good for shooting indoors, and quite a big camera.

This is the Polaroid PDC 3035 digital camera, its a basic point and shoot digital camera with a built in flash and a 3.2 mega pixel image resolution. Also has video recording with sound and 1.5 inch LCD screen on the back and has a SM memory card slot, also with a USB cable to plug it up to your PC and is powered by 4 x AA batteries. This camera has quite a fair image quality when shooting outside but shooting indoors, the image comes out sometimes ...

When you're smiling....

Advantages: OK for beginners
Disadvantages: Very poor battery life, hard to use

Polaroid digital cameras are aimed at people who want a good, basic, starter digital camera at a competitive price. That suited me fine when I bought this camera about 18 months ago. I wasn't looking for anything elaborate, just a basic digital camera for some web use and maybe a few holiday snaps. So after looking around for an inexpensive camera, I ended up with the Polaroid PDC 1100 for around £120, which was a pretty good price. Good price? Yes. ...
...1100 digital camera has quite a lot of features and is lower priced than most other comparable cameras. The problem is that low cost should not mean that the camera is unreliable. There are lots of features and functions on this camera but just try getting them to work properly....good luck! It's pretty annoying when any device fails to function properly, but a when a camera fails at the wrong time and you miss those special moments, it is particularly ...

Polaroid - Polarubbish or a decent camera

Advantages: serial xconnection for older computers, good battery life
Disadvantages: no flash, bad picture quality, cheaply made,

...for a while, though the Polaroid us website still lists it. If you've no usb then take a trip to Max Spielmann's and pick up a Jam cam 3.0 with both serial and usb connectors and leads (great if you upgrade computers later and you get a proper full usb lead you can use with printers or scanners), flash and a n easy to use menu which takes up to 640 x 48 pixels, for only £30.00. As a footnote, Polaroid digital cameras in the U Karen't made for or ...
...cam. So the Polaroid 320 is a total beginners camera. Treat it as that and you'll be happy, I think. Expect more and you'll be dissapointed. And yes, once yiou've (and very soon I may add as you'll get the bug for digital cos you'll never develop again, but will want something beter)the kids will have a new toy to play with. ...
