Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Wen its gud its gud, when its bad its DIABOLICAL!

Advantages: Compact, Affordable, Easy to use
Disadvantages: Useless in low lit areas

I first purchased this digital camera last year as it was on sale and it seemed like a great bargain, afterall this camera is 3 things all in 1 - a digital camera, a pc web camera, a camcorder with built-in microphone! However, to my disappointment it didn't quite meet my expectations... Firstly it is practically unuseable if you are in a low lit area (although I wouldn't consider a room with a 100 Watt bulb as being " low lit ")! Pictures appear ...
...and don't even attempt to record video footage as all you get is very dark, dull, blurry images and the sound quality is far from perfect. Secondly the battery life isn't great, which can cause real problems if you are out taking pictures in the middle of nowhere with no PC handy to safe over your images before the battery dies and the photos are deleted. However, this is usually the case with most low-end digital cameras which have built in memory ...

Cheap for the spec at the time, dissapointing.

Advantages: Takes AA batteries (4), handy lcd on top panel, optical view finder
Disadvantages: Below average picture quality, bulky, no optical zoom

If I recall correctly this was the first 2Mp digital camera I could buy at around £100! - at a time when a similar spec' camera would have cost much more, how times change! Sadly, even in it's time the performance was marginal, images are very 'soft' - my friend Mike's 1.3Mp camera gave sharper results, although to be fair, having a CCD sensor, it can give better pictures than the cheap CMOS sensor cameras with similar Mpix. Pictures taken with the ...
...- in particular, the sky, so the sky will come out without blue or clouds, just white. It's proportions are very 'house brick' and it is large, but oddly, I find that this makes it feel 'light' - maybe with these proportions the brain says 'that must be heavy!' The battery hatch on the bottom bulges under the pressure of the springs making contact to the batteries, so it doesn't look closed properly and can be difficult to latch, more than once ...

A very disappointing experience

Advantages: Small. cheap
Disadvantages: loses pictures. webcam crashes, falls apart

I purchased the camera on the way to our new apartment in Spain and wanted to take pictures to show everyone. After taking pictures on last day, I replaced the battery on numerous occasions but when I arrived home, the pictures had disappeared as the battery had run out in the space of 1 hour from changing the battery. I took other photos just to practice and could not download them as the program would not load from the cd, I presumed that it was ...

A fun toy but that's about all.

Advantages: Small, light, fun to mess around with.
Disadvantages: Eats up batteries fast and takes poor quality photos.

...more expensive camera. The Sipix Blink doubles up as a webcam which can be fun, but again this only works in good lighting. After dark it is pointless even trying, even with artificial lighting unless it is really bright. You can also film short movies with this camera, although obviously they are of limited quality and length. Overall, I would say this is a fun toy for messing about with friends but nothing more. Do not buy it if you want a decent ...

Over exposure ... makes me cold

Advantages: Cheap - reasonable quality - compact flash
Disadvantages: Fairly low res. - slightly washed out colour

...pounds at the moment. SiPix have been operating at the budget end of the digital camera market for a little while now and some of their earlier cameras were more gimick than useful. This camera is one of their more recent offerings that show the company is beginning to react to consumer demand and produce affordable cameras that are capable of producing reasonable quality images. Let's take a look at the positives and negatives. POSITIVES ...
...Compact Flash card - Early SiPix cameras relied on internal memory to store images. Now, that's OK but it is somewhat limiting. Once the memory is full, you have to download or delete to be able to take any more images. Now, this has changed. This camera takes compact flash cards and even comes bundled with an 8Mb compact flash card to get you started. At maximum resolution that is enough for just over eighty images - not bad really and for most ...
