Buying Guide »

Introduction

Long gone are the days of 36 shot films and disposable flashes. The evolution of the age of the digital camera has allowed novice and expert photographers alike to review, edit and improve the quality of their pictures. Be it for the family album pic or the artistic landscape shot, the Ciao Shopping Guide to Digital Cameras gives you overview of some of the major features to look for when making your purchasing decision.

Price + Size

As you would expect, the average price of a digital camera can vary highly depending on the specifications you are looking for. For a camera that provides a basic offering, you can spend as little as £50, but expect the quality of your photos to suffer as a result. While improvements to the number of megapixels offered by cheaper cameras have been made, buyers need to look at many other factors if they want a camera that takes the perfect shot. The lack of a decent zoom, battery life, decent flash and sufficient image and editing features will all have a detrimental effect on the final photo quality. The better you want your camera to perform in these particular areas, the more you will have to spend. Good quality digital cameras will cost between £150 and £200, with the best products starting at just over £300.

Snappy Happy

Advantages: Simple to use
Disadvantages: Quite bulky and heavy compared to some.

...various specs, decided on the Toshiba PDRM25. It came with an 8mb smartmedia card and a 16mb one free, I think that's what swung it. I just love freebies. I can't remember exactly what we paid now but it was around average. The camera comes with a really thick manual, and it's so tempting to ignore it, as it would takes ages to read. But once I did get around to reading it I found it very useful and very simple to follow. In case you can't be bothered ...

...keep as a memory. Toshiba PDR-M5 is a nw digital camera. It has many functions and applications that can be applied depending on the software that you buy. My family, rescently bought one of these cameras to enhance our knowlege and to keep up to date with technology. Technology is advancing at such a rapid pace these days that if you buy something it will be out of date a week later but with digital cameras, as long as you have at least 2.1 megapixels ...
...will list just some of the functions that this camera allows a person to use to make there photos more appropiate and reproduce them over and over again. Firstly, just the digital aspect of any digital camera these days allows you to take a photo, and if you are not satisfied you can delete it or manipulate it to what you want it to be. For example, i have a black dog. This means that when using the flash for most cameras the coat goes all grey ...

Great little camera

Advantages: Weight, Design, Ease of use.
Disadvantages: Memory card holder not secure enough

This is a brilliant little camera, every function you could hope for. The picture quality is perfect (better then some 4 megapixels camera I have seen). And the PDA style screen is brilliant and works well. The functions are laid out well and all work extremely well especially the dual press capture picture button that alows manual focus and tells you wether it has worked properly or not. The flahs is extremely good and allowed me to use the camera ...

High spec but not hard to use

Advantages: easy to use and has loads of features
Disadvantages: cost, battery drain

Only bought this today, and have managed to take over a dozen pictures and a movie clip, download them onto the computer and edit them already. Within 5 minutes of taking out of the box you can use the most common features, ie zoom (2.8x optical plus digital 2x) and erase those that are no good. There are a total of 9 setting for picture options (combination of quality and size) and the medium setting seems good enough for most snaps (only about ...
...the highest setting). I would not have bought at the full original price (£450) but found it in Jessops as an end of line at £200, it only comes with an 8MB smartcard which will not last any time on the highest setting but I bought a 16MB and that takes 99 pictures on the medium setting. My daughter (2.5 years) loves seeing pictures of herself and has already learnt how to change from a single picture to a movie show on the software provided. She ...
