Advantages Easy to follow, well explained, examples given, good reference
Disadvantages Very few colour examples
If like me you've always been a bit bemused when it comes to the principals of cinematography then this book is just what you're looking for. After reading this book I felt as though everything suddenly made sense. The quality and impact of my animated films improved considerably with full understanding and reasoning of why it was composed, lit or coloured a certain way and how my audience would react to the on-screen stimuli.
Everything is explained in a very simple manner with examples which clearly show the effects of certain techniques. It covers cameras, lighting and the use of colour and motion as well as explaining the application of these principals to different genres and effects. It helps you to understand how your audiance interprets the scene and how you can manipulate the viewer to experience particular emotions.
The book is so packed with useful information that I would recomend reading it cover to cover, however if you are just looking for a quick reference book its just as useful.
It really is a must for students studying animation and a useful refresher for those already working in the animation industry. I'm pretty sure i wouldn't have got a first for my degree without it!
