I myself use a Nikon FE that is significantly older than me, and relish the amount of control it gives me over focus, exposure and focal length.
However, it's manual nature does make it rather difficult for wildlife photography, as it can sometimes take me several seconds to compose a shot. It may not sound like much, but it's long enough to miss an opportunistic shot.
If I wanted to buy a new camera, my decision would be quite close between an AF 35mm SLR and an Olympus C-1400L. Both cost about £250, provide autofocus, autoexposure, spot metering and allow you to focus on an object not in the centre of the frame, and will produce pretty decent results - the only remaining decision must be between quality and speed.
I too bemoan the lack of manual over-rides on many of the affordable digital cameras, but comparing AF SLR film vs. digital is a close match.
