This little solid fuel look-alike stove is really cute; spreads a lovely warm glow and gives a focal point into a room, without any of the risks from open flames.
Why Would You Want It
We had the chimneys taken off the house and the fireplaces blocked in with the coming of central heating. However the dining room looked dull, boring, flat and simply uninviting with just a pseudo fireplace. We found this neat little freestanding stove, priced around £80 at most outlets. Took it straight out the box, plugged it in and instantly there is was glowing and flickering from the 'optiflame' log effect. This flame effect can be run independently from the built in convector heater which has two settings for either 1kW or 2kW heat. Since it only consumes 130 watts to run the flame effect it is economical at the cost of just pennies to create the cosy warm glow as and when you need it. Safer than candles and without any fuss, the flame effect is virtually silent, created by fine strips of light fabric gently wafting in an air stream with randomised flickering light created by the movement. It is very effective, realistic and only lacks the crackling and spitting you would normally get from real logs. However there is no fuel to fetch, no ash pan to clean, no smoke damage and no residual smell. Those innovative and enterprising Victorian's would have loved it, gadget technology and engineering at its best.
We have never needed to heating functions but its reassuring to know it would be available in the event of the central heating failing, horror of horrors! Although the door and hinges look realistic, (especially as the edges gather that fine film of dust associated with cast iron objects) , the door does not actually open, and the fan heater is cleverly disguised under the base of the oven, so as to be almost unnoticeable. Obviously this would also be a much safer option than candles or a real log fire with little ones about, as there no open flames or apertures for those inquisitive little fingers…….
