There are a wide range of ‘flavoured’ houmous dips available at Tesco’s alongside ordinary houmous. I am a huge houmous fan and they are really handy when I get in late from work and there is no time to cook. It’s just a question of grilling some pitta bread and there you have it! On a recent trip I noticed that they had a promotion on their dips and that you could get 2 for £2. This is a saving of 28p as they cost £1.14 each. I spotted the reduced ... ...was one that I’d never tried I popped it in my basket. I wasn’t particularly going for a reduced fat variety but this was the one on promotion and I’ve tried a low fat version of Tesco’s normal houmous and it didn’t really taste much different to their normal one.
For those who have never had houmous, it is a Mediterranean dip that is traditionally made with crushed chickpeas, tahini (sesame seed paste), garlic and olive oil. The caramelised onion ...
Advantages: It tastes great and is good value for money. Disadvantages: A couple of other brands are slightly cheaper.
I have sampled houmous from most main supermarkets and would recommmend this one out of all of them. In my opinion the balance of flavours is just right, compared to other own brands which taste a little bland. I have sometimes been put off foods because of the smell, but this product ticks all the boxes.
It is also fantastic value for money at just over £1 and there are a variety of different styles, e.g morrocan/chunky. However, from my point ...
I tried the Tesco houmus with butternut squash and it was scrummy. I thought it was going to be a really weird combination as i am only used to having butternut squash hot as either a soup or a veg with my sunday roast. This was a very pleasant suprise. The texture seemed slightly thicker than usual houmus and it was more yellow (due to the squash). I was dubious about trying it at first but the flavour was really nice. It was not as grainey as i ... ...slight tang. Not a tang like citrus or lemon more an after taste. This was where the squash came into it. I can not remeber the price as it was in my big shop but it was the same as all the other pots. I found it went really well with pitta bread and raw carrots. I actually found the carrots better with it as they added a freshness to it.
If you like houmous i would advise to try this as it is a really nice dip to have when you dont want to have ...
Advantages: Tasty, low in fat and calories, decent serving size Disadvantages: The cracker-cheese-sauce ratio may not be to everyone's taste!
...cracker of some variety, some Philadelphia cream cheese and a dip. There are several varieties, this one containing rice crackers, light cream cheese and a sweet chilli dip. I was impressed with the amount of crackers, so much so that I was worried I would run out of the other components before I finished them! They are round and smell strongly of rice, similar to those Japanese snack mixes you can get, which I generally hate, but tasted inoffensive ... ...the cracker and really adds texture and moisturise more than cheese flavour, as it's pretty mild and inoffensive. And the dip was sweet and tangy, with enough of a kick if you happen to single out one of the chilli seeds, but pretty mild also. I'm not a huge cheese fan at the best of times, and while I do like cream cheese I was never majorly into Dairylea Dunkers, and was skeptical as to how the chilli sauce would combine with the cheese. Actually, ...
Advantages: Very tasty, different Disadvantages: could be too hot for some
...the vegetable section in most Tesco stores. it needs to be kept refrigerated so it is in the cool section. Look at the use by date as it does go off .
Flavours:
This is one of several flavoured varieties of houmous made by Tesco. Others include Lemon and coriander, black olive , sun-dried tomato and latest is jalapeno. The last is VERY spicey and best served with fresh vegetable bits rather than crisps to counter the spice. The lemon and coriander ... ...taste which is great as a contrast. What do you do with houmous?
I have discovered that any of these houmous varieties work brilliantly stirred through pasta with some chopped capsicum and pepperoni as a meal with a fresh side salad. The same dish can be served as a salad itself alongside other salads in a buffet/barbeque.
We also spread houmous on sanswiches instead of butter/margarine and this gives amn extra flavour to salad type sandwiches.
