Advantages: None Disadvantages: Departments don't talk to each other, will extort money for nothing
I have been a direct line customer for over 5 years and had not experienced any problems until recently when a direct debit failed. Direct Line were not able to tell me why it had not worked (not entirely surprised, but I had checked with the bank before phoning and all was fine as far as they were concerned). Direct Line's response was to demand the full premium up front, or cancel the policy - not liking to be threatened, I cancelled the policy. ... ...money without any reason.
Summary :- don't touch Direct Line. The adverts are nice but they are covering up incompetence and harsh business practice. I switched to eSure who I am finding a lot better; take out separate AA or RAC cover too, it's far easier. ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Very poor customer service when making claims.
...my first subsantial claim with Direct Line Insurance after the theft of my vehicle. The vehicle has not been found, the police have closed the file on it and yet, two months on, I am still exchanging letters and phone calls with Direct Line in an attempt to get them to pay out on the policy. I have been a customer with them for 10+ years and, to date, have thankfully never had to make a claim. I am amazed at how difficult the process is proving to ... ...outcome I shall be removing all my business - both car insurance and home/contents insurance - to another provider and will be recommending my friends and family who use this provider take this line of action also. Advantages: Can be cheap Disadvantages: Claims are a true nightmare
...with Privilege, a subsidiary of Direct Line. My car was written off following a collision with a car insured by Direct Line. The other party accepted full and complete liability.
You would think that would make things simple, but it did not. I had to deal with six (6!) different departments, none of whom would talk to each other. None of them were helpful or constructive. They lost letters, (and faxes!) their replies were form letters that failed ... ...were wonderful and they helped me even though they were not required to deal with accidents, only break downs.
Have you seen the TV adverts for Direct Line and Privilege Insurance? In my case the reality was a total nightmare, it could not have been more different. Go elsewhere! ...

When I got my provisional driving licence, I was insured as a second driver on my car, with my dad as the main driver. Having passed my test in September, I took out my own insurance policy,and, predictably, the premium doubled. The cheapest quote I could find was with DirectLineplc.
However, this month, whilst at University, my car was stolen, and found burnt out. It has been a fight to get a settlement, and they provide no update as to the status of the claim. Each time I rang them, I was passed from pillar to post, and eventually, I asked to speak to a supervisor. Far from sorting out my claim, she was rude, unhelpful, and confused matters further.
Finally, almost a month after my car was recovered, I have been sent a letter with a settlement. I decided that I wished to dispute the settlement, and had to send them adverts ...
