Being 22 and having 4 points on my licence, my insurance was always going to be high. Over the past 5 years i've driven numerous cars including a 2.0l ford probe, a metro and peugeot 306. Predictably, my insurance quotes were always nearing the £1000 mark. When I purchased my Ford Probe, I was pleasantly suprised to discover Elephant.co.uk. The website was easy to use and the quotes were quite a bit lower than what I was used to. I was insured with them for just under a year, when I bought a W-reg Citroen Xsara. I decided to do a bit more shopping for insurance and a friend suggested I try Direct Line. Being a large insurance company, I expected the usual extortionate premium and deposit. I also tried Admiral, AXA, and A-Quote, but it was direct line (online) that offered me the best quote by far. It was at least £100 cheaper than elephant.co.uk and the policy was much more favourable. I took out the policy straight away, paying a very low deposit and have been with them since. The only problem I'm currently experiencing is ridiculous holding times when calling with a query, although the Direct Line website allows you to do pretty much everything a phone operator can do. You also get 10% off your premium if you purchase insurance online, as well as a further 10% if you hold any other policies with them (i have pet insurance, review to follow soon). This review should in no way deter you from trying Elephant.co.uk and their excellent website, but in my experiance, Direct Line are the cheapest mainstream insurer out there.

Advantages: Value for money, excellent cover and speedy, courteous service. Disadvantages: Compensation is paid is in form of gift cards to specific retailers. Cash would be more flexible.
