I was looking through all the insurance companies as a first time driver for 2 months before I passed my test so I got a good range of quotes, about 25.
Direct Line was the cheapest quote at around £1300 for a year or £109 a month (remember, ive just passed and im 18). I was getting quotes for up to £4k and the next lowest was £1500. It would have been cheaper to go as a named driver with my dad but he wouldnt do that and girls get it a lot cheaper as well. I was insuring an old peugeot 106 1.1L and got third party fire and theft.
I joined over the phone and recieved a 10% discount as my dad is with them also. I found them very helpful and easy to communicate with over the phone, they didnt try to sell me loads of other products as some companies do but I asked about breakdown cover and it was an extra £6 a month.
I would recommend this company to any new drivers or even people who have been driving a while.
Their website has more info: www.directline.co.uk Telephone numbers: insurance; 0845 246 3761 breakdown cover; 0845 246 8702 European breakdown cover; 0845 246 0940

Advantages: Value for money, excellent cover and speedy, courteous service. Disadvantages: Compensation is paid is in form of gift cards to specific retailers. Cash would be more flexible.
