I've just read an op on Directline Rescue which was less than flattering shall we say.
My own experience has been good so far.
My husband and I bought our first little car about 4 months ago. I rang all the insurance agencies for quotes, to find that Directline wasn't only the cheapest but had great service. I don't actually drive, I've held a provisional licence for 12 years but never got any lessons. Directline actually lowered the premium when I was added to the policy as a learner driver!
But I digress. This op is about their rescue service. Upon buying out M regFord Fiesta we decided to take it for a little spin as you do! Wanting to try all it's speeds out we headed for the motorway, where upon hitting the outside lane at about 80 miles per hour, the exhaust decided to 'drop off'. I had arranged for cover on the car to start at 7:30pm it was now about 8pm. We hastely pulled over and rang my husbands parents (who are with Directline rescue too.) for the number of directline. Once through to them we found that the computer system hadn't updated yet and so there was no record of our cover. We of course had no record because it was still in the post.
However, this didn't deter directline, who sent out a local mechanic to rescue us. Because I had phone we were made a priorty (me being female!). I did inform them that I would not be staying with the car due to my 3 month old baby being left briefly with the parents! This didn't seem to sink in and they still sent the breakdown truck pretty much immediately! I think the truck just happened to be passing at the right moment! He towed our car off the hard shoulder and dropped my husband and car off on the slip road. This was due to the fact that all we needed to do was unclip the exhaust and then the car was driveable! If we had know this before calling them, we would probably still have called them as it was the hard shoulder of the M1 and it was raining!
~~~Type of Cover~~~
We have opted for the comprehensive cover at a cost of £92.40 called Recovery Plus. What does this get us?
* Roadside Assistance including 1 hour's free labour.
* Car towed to garage if it can't be fixed at the side of the road.
* No mileage or call-out charges.
* Cover as soon as you are a mile from home.
* Cover at our home address.
* Car and passengers recovered to preferred destination if necessary repairs can't be done by end of working day.
* Hire car to return home or continue journey OR the cost of alternative transport for the journey OR B&B accommodation while repairs are carried out (as long as you are more than 25 miles from home).
* Cost of single standard rail fare to collect car.
* Free Message relay service to let family, friends or colleagues know what's happening.
We also get 10% discount for having our insurance with them. There is a no callout discount available each year if you don't use them.
All the above mentioned cover items seem to be very good, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating as they say! I'm hoping that because they didn't actually have our details when we were recovered that we may get away with the no callout discount next year! (I can dream!!!)
Everyone has very different experiences of every breakdown association - you were obviously quite fortunate in this instance. I wonder whether your luck will hold out?? :O)
Advantages: low tax and insurance, small, comfy, good petrol consumption, electric windows, cd player with controls on wheel Disadvantages: not a very smooth drive once you've had it for a year or so, no cigarette lighter or sun roof, everyone's got one!
