Whilst Direct Line used to be easily the cheapest car insurance they are now really not. Its so boring how insurers start cheap and then assume we're all too stupid to change our insurance policy operator. Direct Line are now expensiv and far more so than Tesco who use exactly the same underlying insurance company. Moreover, Direct line do automatic direct debit renewals. This means that if you don't contact them to terminate an insurance policy then renew it automatically and are allowed to automatically apply a direct debit instruction even if its has been cancelled. Another example of criminalocracy government supporting theft in associated their big businesses. I called up to cancel my car insurane and breakdown cover only to be told that it could only be cancelled during the last onth of the policy. I forgot during a house move. I did however cancel the direct debit instructions. Direct Line had the authority to automaticazlly renew the direct debit take over £1000 and confirm to my old address and ASSUME a renewal when they have not heard from customers. When you then ask for a refund, they only offer 40% refund because you have to cancel within 14 days prior to the new policy starting! This is criminalocracy legalised theft.

I am insured with them. I was not aware that they did auto direct debit. I only pay a small premium anyway and shopping around saves me only pennies. But thanks for the info. I paid by debit card and I did not sign a d/d agreement.

Sounds like you had a bad experience! I am lucky in that I don't own a car (living in London I don't need one) so that's a huge expense and headache I don't have! Triciax
Advantages: low tax and insurance, small, comfy, good petrol consumption, electric windows, cd player with controls on wheel Disadvantages: not a very smooth drive once you've had it for a year or so, no cigarette lighter or sun roof, everyone's got one!
