Since I don't know anything about cars and travel 50 miles to work everyday, I recently decided to take up a breakdown cover.
Obviously I compared prizes and services and asked friends for their experiences. Based on this, I decided to join Direct Line.
They offer: - 24 hour assistance, 365 days a year - Over 6,000 selected breakdown specialists nationwide - Quick response time (they claim less than 40 minutes in average) - 10% discount in the following year, if they are not called out for one year
Depending on your needs and the prize you want to pay, they offer a number of different services:
1. Rescue Roadside assistance including one hour's free labor, once you're a mile from home; free transport to garage if required.
2. Rescue Plus As rescue plus cover for breakdown at home.
3. Recovery As above plus transport of car and passengers to your original destination, your home address or a suitable garage, if the car can't be fixed the same day.
4. Recovery Plus As above plus - A hire car to return home or continue your journey, or - The cost of alternative travel to return home or continue your journey - B&B in a local hotel while your car is fixed (providing you are more than 25 miles from home)
5. EuroPlus The level of cover offers all the benefits of Recovery Plus as well as European roadside help, the cost of travel home if necessary, and the cost of getting your car back too, plus free legal cover and more
I found the following very useful - for a small premium only you can choose Personal Cover. You can rely on their services, no matter in which car you are and no matter if you are driver or passenger. This personal cover can be extended to include your partner, too.
A quote for your specific needs can be easily obtained via phone (0845 246 8702) or online (www.directline.co.uk) with very few and easy steps only. If your partner is already a member or would like to join too, ask for partner tariffs. I got my breakdown cover cheaper based on that. They are not the cheapest break down cover around, but their prizes, compared to the service, are definitely comparable and fair.
Another great idea of the provider - when you buy your policy online, you can access your details online as well, i.e. Amend your policy, track the progress of repairs to your car, view your policy details, get and accept quotes etc.. It just makes life a bit easier.
I cannot tell you a lot about their service, when you really need them. I was lucky enough to not having needed them yet. However, my partner once had an issue and they sorted everything out (check what the problem was, brought the car and my partner to the garage) very quick (within half and hour) and without fuss after a short phone call. And the good thing - even though my partner didn't have his details (cover number etc) with him, they identified him easily with personal details as car registration number, birthday and post code. It couldn't be easier.
Therefore from my current experience, I thoroughly recommend their service.

Advantages: low tax and insurance, small, comfy, good petrol consumption, electric windows, cd player with controls on wheel Disadvantages: not a very smooth drive once you've had it for a year or so, no cigarette lighter or sun roof, everyone's got one!
