The first eight chapters are all completely unrelated. And I mean completely - some of them aren't even set on the planet. And yet, by the end of the novel, all the disparate threads have been drawn together into a single story.
A single strange story, to be sure. But it's well worth your time to read this book. It is so well put together that it took me about three readings t actually figure out all the details, and see just how well Adams had done in putting the thing together.
Nominally, the story is about Dirk Gently, who runs a strange (holistic) detective agency. He's taken on by an old friend of his, who is accused of murdering his boss. This is when things start to get strange....
I found this hard to put down - certainly one of Douglas Adams' better works.
