...of one hoover - The Dirt Devil DD6114 Upright Vacuum Cleaner.
DD6114 is classic Dirt Devil colour, bright red with black attachments. It is a pretty basic cleaner with hose attachment and upholstery brushes as you would get on a standard machine. There is a gauge on the front to adjust your hoover for different carpet thicknesses. I thought this would be quite handy as half of my house is laminated and half is carpeted.
...deteriorated rapidly since using the Dirt Devil. I am currently using a glued together Dyson, whilst waiting for an engineer to return my second Dirt Devil, although I would just prefer a refund!
I promise you , my house is no dustier, dirtier, bittier than the average house so the machine had no more to contend with than would be expected!! Would I recommend the Dirt Devil DD6114, no I wouldnt. Pay another twenty or so quid and get ... more
Like all the people who seem to write vacuum cleaner reviews on Ciao, I had a Dyson, but with excessive cleaning and general wear and tear, my Dyson began to fall to pieces and I decided to treat myself to a new cleaner. I say treat but as I have very little funds for nice new hoovers I had to settle with what I could afford. I went along to my local Comet, where prices are said to be low all the year round. I looked at their aisle full of fancy and dare I say, quite sexy little numbers!! All colours. I could have coordinated my hoover with my whole house if Id wished!! Unfortunately sex appeal costs and I was left with the choice of one hoover - The Dirt Devil DD6114 Upright Vacuum Cleaner.
The cleaner has 1200watt power which is pretty good, although now hoovers are reaching 2000 watt power! It also has a 4 stage filtration system. There is a filter on the front of the cleaner which can be removed and cleaned. There is also a filter inside of the machine, which can also be removed and cleaned. Between the two filters duct particles are filtered and trapped. When you first get your cleaner, it does state that the filters need more regular cleaning as the machine extracts finer particles of dust than your previous cleaner was able to.
The pre-motor filter, which is inside of the machine, needs cleaning every six to nine months, after the initial month from purchase. The exhaust filter, the external filter, should be cleaned more regularly.
The filters can be washed in hot soapy water to reuse them or replacement filters can be bought.
The drive belt, my personal worst nightmare, should need to be changed twice a year also. Although foreign objects which obstruct the belt can cause the belt to wear and snap! I had invisible foreign objects which caused this damage!
The belts are easily fitted. There are six screws which need to be removed and the base plate comes off. Although a little fiddly, once you have done it a couple of times, it is quite easy.
The cleaner also has a thermal cut out which protects the machine if the motor overheats. The machine will stop of its own accord when the motor overheats and will not turn back on until the motor has cooled down, ususally about twenty minutes.
There is a bag full indicator. When a new bag is fitted, the indicator is blue. The indicator turns red when thte bag needs changing. It also shows red if there is a blockage within the machine.
When you get your DD6114, it comes in a huge box with the handle separate. This just needs to be clicked into the top of the machine. There are two screws which are needed to be tightened to ensure a secure fit. The cleaner comed already fitted with a drive belt, filters and one bag fitted and one spare. To buy spares, I paid £7.99 for four bags and two filters. The cleaner itself was £39.95 which I considered a bargain.
When I got the cleaner home, I immediately wanted to try it as my carpet was looking a bit grim! I turned it on, and , my god, the noise!!! It is very noisy, like a lawn mower!!! I did think it was quite effective, but it was new so it should be! It is rather heavy so staircases are ratehr difficult, despite having the hose. It is very plastic, yes I know they are all plastic, but this is more plasic and doesnt seem to be that durable! It clunks and creaks and generally sounds quite ancient!!When lowering the handle to actually hoover, for the first time, there was an almighty crack and I actually thought I had broken it. You get used to that too! There are three handle positions:- 1) Upright for storage, 2) For normal use, 3) For cleaning under furniture.
For the first month, I used my new cleaner regularly and gradually got used to the noise. Then I began to notice a reduction in pick up. I checked the bag, cleaned the filters. Everything I was told to. The cleaner began to work okay again.
After another week or so, I was quite happily hoovering my sitting room when my hoover decided to stop. I assumed it was the thermal cut out so truned it off at the power and left it to cool down. Before turning it back on again, I decied to check the tubes for blockages. As it is an upright, it is very difficult to get into the tubes. I would get the machine working again and all would be fine but then the next time I would use it, I would get half way around my ground floor and then it would cut off again!
In the base of the hooveer, there is the main tube, which seems to block incessently. Dust just gathers at the bend and stays there. I have cleaned and cleaned the pipes but it always gets congested. I got a bit sick of the dismantling of my DD6114 especially after burning my hand on the belt, so I decided to ring the helpline and get some advice. I was adviced to return the cleaner back to Comet and get a replacement.
I did this, and Comet replaced the cleaner with very little fuss! Thumbs up for Comet staff at Clifton Moor !!
Hooray, I thought! I took my new hoover home. Just as noisy, picked up as sufficiently. For the first month again, no problems, then I began to get the same tell tale signs. This time, it got so congested that the belt burnt out and snapped. I hear you all say,'Is your house that dirty!!!'. No it isnt, although the cleanliness of my carpet has deteriorated rapidly since using the Dirt Devil.
Pay another twenty or so quid and get another make entirely!!!
...ended up with was a Dirt Devil DD9002.
Opinion on Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners seems to vary dramatically, it would seem people either love them or hate them (a bit like Marmite but with more suction power!)
Dirt Devil ‘Rascal’ hand vacuuming units are well known and I’ve always found them really reliable, but I hadn’t realised that Dirt Devil make full sized machines.
Of course the old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ certainly comes into play ... ...but they are even more dull than the filter stuff so not worth recounting here.
That’s all there is to it really. It’s a cheap and cheerful machine retailing at around £78. Mine came from Argos but they are widely available.
The Dirt Devil DD9002 – it sucks!! ...

...had a great offer on. Dirt Devil MVP swivel glide Vacuum M086420 for $179 (£115). The best part of this deal included a free Dirt Devil corded hand vac worth $39 (£25). We jumped with delight and purchased it immediately.
My husband loves to hoover. My friends laugh when I say this, as it is a brand name, they say vacuuming. He tried it out. We have 1,700 square feet of area. He completely filled the canister where the dirt and dust fills up. I ... ...mushrooms in this carpet". I had filthy carpets and didn't even know about it.
It has a 12 amp. motor, much better than our last one. The swivel caster wheels are great for turning and twisting. It gets into corners and around furniture easily. The bumper helps to protect the furniture and appliances. The tools are on board for easy access. The hose extends out to around 13 feet for getting behind beds and sofas. It also has a headlight for getting ...

...a good thing! Dirt Devil® Ultra This is a very handy little vacuum because you can take it wherever you go inside the home or in your vehicle. In fact we have two of them. (I really did some cleaning to have found both of them!) One will stay in my Blazer so that when I am visiting somewhere and need something to do I can always clean it out! Or, if one of the children makes a mess I can use it for that purpose as well. I would suppose that it is ... ...the power of their original Dirt Devil® hand vac. It has a built in stretch hose and crevice tool. The hose will stretch for easy clean up in sofa’s, chairs and loveseats. The crevice tool is useful for cleaning in those hard to reach places in your furniture or vehicle. But be careful and don’t pull the hose to far, you can cause it to crack over time! There is a revolving brush for deep cleaning with a 2-speed switch with an extra long ...

...decided to go for a Dirt Devil. Besides it looked nice. Hmmm.Bad move. WHAT IS IT LIKE
Lovely red colour, quite tall with a circular see- through canister on the front that you take off to empty when it gets full. Quite wide flat front. The expanding hose comes up from a socket at the bottom and winds over a little handle at the back, and then plugs in at the other side. When you want to use the hose and attachments to reach things or places to ... ...to it. Sounds funny but as soon as you see it you know how it works. It's not particularly noisy when you use it- so that's quite good..It doesn't get right up close to the skirting boards when you use it either and that's quite important for me -budgie seed tends to fall down between the carpet and the skirting boards. Use the hose to do this and it picks the stuff up. (sometimes)

Advantages: Small (good for small home), cheap. Disadvantages: Only picks up well with new bag; cable too short; hose slips out easily; bags not available on high street.
We bought the Dirt Devil DD2420 for about £28 in our local supermarket. Our old vacuum cleaner had died, and having a small flat with almost no storage space we wanted power but not size. We recognised that you get what you pay for, but decided to give it a trial anyway. The DD 2420 is a small cylinder cleaner that has tiny dust bags. These are not cheap, at I think around £5 per pack costing about the same as the much, much bigger bags for our old ... ...delighted as it picked up dirt much better than our previous machine. A ferocious little sucker, in fact. However the disadvantages of having tiny bags soon became clear, as cleaning efficiency dropped rapidly as the bag took on dust. As I hoovered on other problems made themselves known. Firstly, the cable is relatively short - I have to use an extension lead to reach everywhere. Secondly, there is an irritating little fault in the design of the ...

I think once I have finally managed to finally get rid the dust and filth the previous owners of this house left behind that I will begin to love the little devil once again when I can just use it for the purpose I bought it for which was to do the stairs in a flash (rather than emptying twenty times!).
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Having spent years either risking life and limb battling with a heavy vacuum (and associated cables and tubes) to do it or avoiding doing it for so long that I had to climb over a mountain of crumbs and dirt to get upstairs, I finally decided to buy a hand held, cordless 'dust buster' style product to get on top of one of my most hated chores.
The main criteria that I was looking at were price, suction and weight. And, although I couldn't find any reviews on this product, I opted for the Dirt ...

Advantages: Easy to use, lightweight, good suction Disadvantages: Hair/ string buildup on underside
Who really enjoys cleaning? I personally hate cleaning, although it has to be done, if you have the right tools cleaning can be quick and painless. With The DirtDevil 85500 Upright Vacuum I can easily clean all the carpet in my home in a fair amount of time, which leaves more time for me to do what I really love, write Reviews. Not only is this vacuum light weight, it is rather small compared to other model vacuums and stores well in my closet. This is my second DirtDevil vacuum cleaner, the other one I shall not name specifically, however I will say I wasn't impressed.
The DirtDevil 85500 Upright Vacuum has many neat features that allow you to not only clean carpets, but gives you the power to clean blinds, curtains, rugs, cars, and ceiling fans. This vacuum is so easy to use, my five year old daughter loves to help me ...
