As my husband and I could only afford a small place we decided to get a 2-bedroom flat. The place was relatively small and so we didn't feel the need to buy a large expensive vacuum cleaner so opted for the red Dirt Devil from Argos for a snip at £28! It looks like any standard vacuumcleaner but smaller in size.
It was so small and light that it was easy to store away! The first few times I used it, it was so powerful that it even picked up the carpet round the edges so I thought I'd bagged a bargain, as it also came with a small brush to get to the hard to reach angles and a couple of free hoover bags.... result! Or so I thought....
Then after the fourth or fifth time I used it, it didn't pick up the dirt as well as before no matter how many times I ran it over the same spot or how hard I pushed it thinking a little pressure would help! I checked the bag and it wasn't even half full. I persevered for the time being until I thought the bag was full enough for me to change. Then the vacuum cleaner acted as if it was brand new and worked like the first few times and it all became clear that unless the bag was empty or relatively empty I wouldn't have a clean carpet. On top of that, the brush flattened easily and the dirt clung to it. The cord wasn't long enough, I mean I only live in a flat and the cord was only long enough to do half the flat and then I'd have to unplug it and find another socket on the other side of the flat to be able finish hoovering.
You also have to use specific bags for the hoover and there are limited places that stock them, I have yet to find a place that stocks the brush for me to replace!
I truly believe in the saying... "You only get what you paid for!" now!!!

I think maybe there's more than one size/style of Dirt Devil. The one I have actually came as a free gift (so I got more than I paid for) - it's very small and doesn't take bags at all. It works for things like the car and upholstery. From your description, yours would seem to be different.

Hi there, good op although a little more info would be cool, include things like the weight, power, dust bag size. If you take your cleaner back to Argos and explain that it's not working as it should, they will swop it for a brand new one for you! I have just had to do this with a hand blender I brought from there, although I hadn't got the box or a receipt to prove it was brought from Argos (which it was!), they gave me a new one no problem! Hope this helps. I have a small flat too btw, I had a similar compact hoover to this a few years ago, although it was made by JMB. I now have a "Henry", it was £94 which seems a little extravegant for such a small space but he never loses suction power. You really do get what you pay for it seems, as you said! Ciao for now - J.
