that after I used some of the illustrations and mentioned the book in class most students went and bought a copy. Their final papers were heavily 'Field-referenced'! That is the best endorsement one can give to a text' - "Journal of Advanced Nursing". 'The wide range of statistical techniques covered combined with good accompanying background explanations communicated in a relaxed affable style make this book a useful addition to the bookshelves of both practitioners and teachers of statistics alike in the social sciences' - Peter Watson MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit Cambridge and Chair of ASSESS Independent European Group of SPSS Users. 'The Second Edition of Andy Field's "Discovering Statistics Using SPSS" is an excellent book and a valuable addition to the teaching of statistics in the behavioral sciences. The title of the book accurately reflects the approach taken. This is not simply a primer on how to use SPSS but is a very good statistics text using SPSS as a vehicle for illustrating and expanding on the statistical content of the book.At the same time it also serves as a manual for SPSS and has taught me things that I had not known about the software. One advantage of the text is that it is not tied specifically to the latest version of SPSS. Although the examples use version 12.0 there are many references to the difference the students will find if they are using an earlier version. A good example of how the text is structured can be seen in Chapters 8 and 9. Chapter 8 provides an introduction to the analysis of variance and roughly the first 40 pages are devoted to statistical issues. Only after that introduction does the author move to a discussion of using SPSS to run the analyses. Chapter 9 deals with the analysis of covariance and here the author moves almost immediately to SPSS printout having laid most of the groundwork in the previous chapter. I find this flexible approach to the blending of content and software to be an effective way of teaching the material. It is impossible to review this book without commenting on Andy's particular style. I enjoyed it immensely and think that it would appeal to both students and their instructors. It is refreshing to see someone who doesn't take himself too seriously' - David C Howell Professor Emeritus University of Vermont. 'The new edition of Field's textbook confirms its place as the best statistics text for undergraduate social science students. It provides support for those less confident about statistical analysis whilst having sufficient depth that it will still be valuable to more mathematically experienced people. There is a focus throughout on the practical aspects of data analysis and interpretation whilst at the same time emphasizing the importance of rigour and a good understating of theory! essential reading' - Dr Ian Walker Department of Psychology University of Bath. 'Very useful valuable and interesting. Summing up: Highly recommended' - "Choice" Current Reviews for Academic Librarians. This new edition of Field's textbook provides students of statistical methods with everything they need to understand use and report statistics - at every level.Written in Andy Field's vivid and entertaining style and furnished with playful examples from everyday student life (among other places) this book forms an accessible gateway into the often intimidating world of statistics and a unique opportunity for students to ground their knowledge of statistics through the use of SPSS. This text is fully compliant with the latest release of SPSS (version 13)......
book on statistics that you will need! Fully revised and restructured this new edition is even more accessible as it now walks students through from introductory level to advanced level concepts all the while grounding knowledge through the use of SPSS. Andy's humorous and self-deprecating style and the book's host of characters make the journey entertaining as well as educational. While still providing a very comprehensive collection of statistical methods tests and procedures and packed with examples and self-assessment tests to reinforce knowledge the new edition now also offers: a more gentle introduction to basic level concepts and methods for beginners; new textbook features to make the book more user-friendly for those learning about more advanced concepts encouraging 'critical thinking'; a brand new full colour design making it easy for students to navigate between topics and to understand how to use the latest version of SPSS; both 'real world' (the bizarre and the wonderful) and invented examples illustrate the concepts and make the techniques come alive for students; an additional chapter on Multilevel Modelling for advanced level students; and reinforced binding to make the book easier to handle at your computer workstation. The book also includes access to a brand new and improved companion website bursting with features including: animated 'SPSS walk-through' videos clearly demonstrating how to use the latest SPSS modules; self-marking multiple choice questions; datasets for psychology Business and Management and Health Sciences; a flash-card glossary for testing knowledge of key concepts; access to support material from SAGE study skills books; and access the demo website online. Statistics lecturers are also provided with a whole range of resources and teaching aids including: the test bank; over 300 multiple choice questions ready to upload to WebCT Blackboard or other virtual learning environments; charts and diagrams in electronic format for inclusion in lecture slides; and PowerPoint slides written by the author to accompany chapters of the text.
material on statistics that the student will need and was missing at least in the first edition. This book is the best blend that I know of a textbook in statistics and a manual on SPSS. It is a balanced composite of both topics, using SPSS to illustrate important statistical material and, through graphics, to make visible important approaches to data analysis.

This text is fully compliant with the latest release of SPSS (version 13). The key updates in the new edition include: more coverage with completely new material on non-parametric statistics, loglinear analysis, effect sizes and how to report statistical analysis; even more student-friendly features, including a glossary of key statistical terms and exercises at the end of chapters for students to work through, with datasets and answers to chapter exercises on the accompanying CD-ROM; and, a larger and more easy-to-reference format: notation in each section identifies the intended level of study while the new 2-colour text design enhances the features in the book and, together with the larger format, provides extra clarity throughout.Andy Field is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at The University of Sussex where his success in making statistics accessible was recognized with a teaching award in 2001. He is also winner of the British Psychological Society Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Psychology. From the AuthorDescription of the text from the back coverThis book is an attempt to combine both statistical theory and practical application of that theory using SPSS. As such it is 2 books for the price of 1. I've written it in a very accessible and frivolous style and it's all quite light hearted (without compromising the material covered).Anyway, for reference this is what the back cover says:"Andy Field has written an up-to-date student-oriented textbook with the aim of making the learning of advanced statistics and using SPSS as painless as possible.Written in an accessible style, the book provides the beginning student with an understanding of statistics and a knowledge of SPSS. While other books either concentrate on statistical theory or on the functions of the popular computer program SPSS, Andy Field integrates the two to provide the student with a thorough grounding in statistics through learning to use SPSS.Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows is designed to answer all the questions students ask when using SPSS to analyse data. Each statistical test is introduced in a clear and accessible way, with examples of how to run an analysis in SPSS.The book also provides a detailed, but highly accessible, guide to using SPSS for more complex statistical tests. There are illustrations of dialogue boxes throughout, and each chapter concludes with a set of exercises and descriptions. The book includes a CD-ROM with SPSS datasets and the author provides a website for further help and updates. The book is suitable for use with SPSS versions 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 9.0 and above.Contents: Some Preliminaries \ Exploring Data \ Correlation \ Regression \ Logistic Regression \ Comparing Two Means \ Comparing Several Means: ANOVA (GLM 1) \ Complex Anova (GLM 2) \ Repeated Measures Designs (GLM 3) \ MANOVA \ Exploratory Factor Analysis." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Advantages: Impossible to put a statistical foot wrong with such clear and concise explanations Disadvantages: None: I wish all statistics books were this well written
...discussed the most popular and widely used tools instead of looking at research from a statistical purists point of view. Commonsense chapters that explain how the book is organised and the best way to remove anomalies from data sets are extremely useful topics that most social science methods texts don’t bother to cover. Checklists summarising the steps associated with various processes are a helpful addition.
Comparison of packages
I useSPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and have regular wars with SAS devotees. Using Multivariate Statistics cuts through ideological and philosophical differences by covering the pros and cons of all the major software ‘players’ (SPSS, SAS, SYSTAT and BMDP). Handy charts tell you unambiguously what each of the packages can and can’t do before you get too excited...

Advantages: Flexible study, good value for money, good tutor support Disadvantages: can be quite isolated, spare time, what's that?
...of the work!). Having said that, the course text for Elements of Statistics is a recommended text for the MSc I'm studying so it must be good. Applications of Probability contains a lot of Maths so it's useful to have some kind of Applied Maths experience beforehand and the same is true of Linear Statistical Modelling. Fortunately the OU website gives you pretty clear indications of any prerequisites. I find the approach the OU generally uses, with lots of examples and case studies, works really well as it's a lot less dry than pages and pages of numbers.
It's only now that I'm doing distance learning not with the OU that I realise just what a well-oiled machine the OU is. Couse materials were always delivered well in advance of the February start date (sometime even before Christmas) and any errors in the material were highlighted early on. I...

Advantages: none Disadvantages: Very hard to digest
...Basically this book contains everything you would need to know about statistics and research Methods at degree level. It explains Qualitative and Quantitative Statistical Tests and various ways of doing research. Each chapter explains a different statistical test and it progresses starting with simple comparisons progressing to the most complex tests you will need to understand at degree level.
I found this book was very hard going. It is not written in a way that is at all easy to read, let alone digest. The explainations are not at all clear and the examples do not clarify the text. There are a lot of much simpler statistics book son the market and although this one is smaller and probably cheaper I certainly wouldnt be tempted to buy it.
I certainly wouldnt recommend this to anyone who was new to psychology or statistics as it is...
