Review of "Disney Princess Belle Tea Party Cart"
It's been a while coming, but it's a sad farewell ciaoers.
We bought my daughter this Disney Princess Belle Tea Party Cart for her second birthday. She has a play kitchen and lots of play food which she loves playing with so I thought a Tea Trolley would be a nice addition to her play. As soon as I saw this one, I fell in love with it and knew it would be ideal. I picked it up for £45 with a voucher deal from Smyths - it currently sells at around £60 full price. It is recommended for children aged 3 years plus.
THE TEA TROLLEYThe trolley comes flat-packed in a large cardboard box and requires some self-assembly. Once assembled, it is approximately 50cm x 50cm x 35cm. It requires 3 AAA batteries, which come supplied. The cart is made of yellow and pink plastic, with purple plastic wheels which have pink rose details on. The wheels are attached to a square piece of yellow plastic with embossed pattern detailing all over. From this there are two pink plastic pieces, one on each side, standing vertically. These each have a heart shape in the centre with a picture of Mrs Potts, the teapot from The Beauty and The Beast, on. These lead up to the top of the table, a yellow plastic rectangle with raised edges with pink patterns on. There are also pictures of Princess Belle on the side. At one end there is a pink plastic handle for pushing the trolley with.
On the top surface of the trolley is a pink circular turning table. There is a rose detailed push button the side that spins this and plays 'Be Our Guest'. On top of the turntable there are three raised circles and on here, the provided teapot (Mrs Potts) and cups (including Chip with the characteristic gap at the top) sit. There are also two purple plastic teaspoons provided and a cardboard invitation to Belle's tea party.
PLAY TIMEPutting the toy together initially was very straight forward and the instructions aren't really required as it is very self explanatory. The only thing to watch for is to make sure that all the parts are pushed in correctly so that you hear a click - which requires a little bit of force. It only takes 5 minutes to assemble though.
The toy is recommended for three years plus but it is the ideal height for my two year old to push. Being made of plastic, it is lightweight too and easy for her to control. She loves the rotating circle to put the teapot and cups on and enjoys pushing the button to spin this. One push of the button spins it round one full rotation and plays two lines of the 'Be our guest' song. Unfortunately, these are the only lines that the toy plays and this can get rather repetitive! My daughter enjoys the music though and will dance as it plays. She loves playing imaginatively with the toy too, using the teapot to pour tea in to the cups, stirring them with the spoons, then wheeling it on the trolley to give them to her 'guests'. She does find it quite difficult slotting the pot and cups on to the raised notches on the turning plate so that they stay in place when it spins. This can prove frustrating to her if they fall over but trying to do so is definitely good for her hand-eye co-ordination and manipulative skills! There is quite a large space on the trolley and she will also use her play plates and wooden cakes on here to supplement the tea and it supports these perfectly. The trolley is lightweight so it can move quite fast and, although it is relatively easy for my daughter to steer and control, it does occasionally bump into furniture etc. This doesn't cause it (or the furniture!) any damage though.
I really love the look of this tea trolley and it is definitely very pretty. The plastic is quite thick and sturdy but, it is still plastic, and as such I think that the RRP is greatly overpriced. Obviously this has a lot to do with it being part of the Disney Beauty and the Beast brand, but it is still too highly priced in my opinion, even taking that in to account. I would say a more acceptable price point for this would be around the £40 mark. I also expected it to play a little bit more of the music than the two lines that it does and certainly for it to play in longer bursts. The turning table is a nice, fun feature and one that brings both my two year old daughter and three year old son much enjoyment. They play together really well with this toy and it holds their attention well, as well as encouraging their imagination and conversational skills. The teapot and the tea cups are well made too, and look just like the characters they are intended to be. They stand up well to dropping etc and have not damaged at all.
Overall, this is undoubtedly a lovely toy and one that does get played with a lot in our house. However, I would expect a little more for my money and I would only really recommend this if you find it on a decent offer (I haven't really seen it discounted often though!).
