People can think of television action figures in one of two ways; they are either toys for small children, or they are collectors' items which wil be worth a fair bit of money if kept in good condition! Me, I was drawn into the middle of it! To me, they are not just part of a collection, but used as inspiration for the imagination!
***** Of course, there would not be Doctor Who figures, if there were no Doctor Who! First starting in the '60s, Doctor Who has been a massive part of BBC television for several decades! Everybody who can remember it has a particular Doctor they can relate to, and the newest viewers are creating and moulding their own Doctors from the latest series'. But with these Doctors, you will find all sorts of creatures and aliens! They were things we loved to hate, and the BBC thought that we connected with them so well that they decided to make little five inch figures, resembling their key features!
***** There are many figures from the latest three series' of Doctor Who!
♥Autons (pack of two) The autons come from the first episode, Rose, in Series 1. They are plastic shop window dummies controlled by the evil Nestene Conciousness! I dont have these figures, but I think I might buy them. They look quite like the real ones in the episode. I think it is good that they come as two in a pack, as it makes them more life-resembling!
♥Rose Tyler Rose (played by Billie Piper) is the first character we see in Doctor Who in the first series, and goes on to becoming the Doctor's companion. She is a very bubbly and emotional girl, who would not leave the Doctor's side no matter what the circumstances were. I hunted high and low for this figure as I could not find it anywhere! In the end I did find it, but a few weeks after, my dog got hold if it and chewed poor Rose to bits, so I had to buy another one, which was equally as hard to find! Now, Rose Tyler is always on the shelves. Typical! Rose's position and clothes are extremely lifelike on this figure. With this figure, she is wearing jeans and the infamous pink hooded jumper. Then there was a Series 2 Rose figure out. I do not have this one. She is wearing the clothes she wore for New Earth; black trousers and the blue-purple shirt. I think this short-haired figure makes her look larger than she is.
♥Sycorax The sycorax come from The Christmas Invasion, ou first proper episode with David Tennant as Doctor. They try to invade Earth on Christmas Day using Blood Control! This figure is quite lifelike. It comes complete with staff and whip, and the cloak is just the right length. This was one of the first figures I bought!
♥Cassandra We have seen the even Lady Cassandra twice in Doctor Who; in The End Of The World - Series 1, when she tried to kill everybody on Satelleite 5 when they were watching Earth explode, and again in New Earth - Seres 2, when she was hiding in the hospital and took form in Rose's body.Cassandra claims she was the 'last human'. This figure comes complete with three robotic spiders - Cassandra's pets. It is quite a lifelike figure, but it would have been a lot better if the 'skin' was a different texture. Slightly more rubbery perhaps.
♥10th Doctor The 10h Doctor is played by David Tennant. The Doctor had to regenerate after Rose abrosbed the energy from the TARDIS and he had to then take it in himself in order to save her. But this pressure was too much and caused him to regenerate. He took the form of the 10th Doctor, who has currently battles out in two series'. I was extatic when I got this figure. It comes in two forms; with trenchcoat, or without trenchcoat. I have the one with trenchcoat. It even comes with a tiny little sonic screwdriver!
♥Slitheen The Doctor first met the slitheen in Series 1 where he had to defeat a group of them in order to save the country. He then bumped into Blon Fel Fotch (known as Margaret Blaine) later on when she tries to blow up the whole of Cardiff. The Doctor saves the day and turns her into an egg, I love this figure. It is so cute with its little mouth wide open - you can hang it from your fingernail too! The shape of this creature is spot on, but I think the figure should have had a slightly more rubbery feel to it.
♥Mox Of Balhoon The Doctor met the Mox Of Balhoon on Satelleite 5 in The End Of The World. He was a cute little fellow, who sadly blew up with the heat! This figure is extremely difficult to buy! I think I have seen it twice in a shop or something, so it goes without saying that I do not own it! The shape of his lumpy body is rather accurate though!
♥Cyberman The Doctor met the cybermen twice in Series 2, defeating theController the first time and banishing these hollow, emotionless metal monsters into the Parallel Universe. Escaping through the Void, they managed to work their way back into Torchwood, in the form of ghosts, and were involved in the 'death' of Rose. This figure is quite spectacular. The tiny detail of the 'wire' in the joints, and the features on the chest button are perfect. The figure also bends in the correct places to allow him to walk and move exactly like a cyber!
♥Krillitane The Krillitane are shape shifters, found in School Reunion in Series 2. They take over a school and mess with the minds of the pupils. It was up to SarahJane, the Doctor, Rose, Mickey and little K9 to save the day! I dont own this figure, and I dont really want to buy it. The wings are quite large compared to the body and it has quite a frightening face!
♥K9 The Doctor's little tin dog had been his companion for a long time and had helpedhim out in many situations. K9 came along to the new series with his new owner, SarahJane. This figure comes with the Rose Tyler Series 1 figure. If you push down a button on his top, his cage door flies open. Pulling him back and releasing him causes him to whizz forward.
♥Werewolf The Doctor encounters the terrifying beast in Series 1 in Balmoral Castle. It is hidden away in the attic of the Queen's holiday home. The night the Queen is there, the Doctor turns up and it just so happens to be a full moon. It is up to the Doctor to do all he can to save her life, even if it does mean having her Majesty climbing out of a window. Clearly, she would not be amused! I do not have this figure either. I dont think it looks like the real thing at all. It is much too large and bulky.
♥Captain Jack The Doctor and Rose meet Captain Jack in London during World War II. His charm wins Rose over, but it takes the Doctor all the way until the end of Series 1 to like him! The Doctor then is reacquainted with him in the final three episodes of Series 3 where they work as a team and get on splendidly. I really wish I had this dashing little figure! Its features resemble Captain Jack amazingly, and comes complete with his sonic device!
♥Dalek The Doctor's worst enemy is the dalek. As evil and threatening as they are, the daleks are petrified of the infamous Doctor. He has met them many times throughout the latest three series', and were involved in the 'death' of Rose Tyler. The dalek figure on its own is quite rare, as it is usually found in packs of three of four. I do not have this one, though I think it would be a good one to have in my collection. It has little panels like the real daleks, and looks equally as scary!
♥Racnoss The Racnoss is a giant creature with spider-like qualities, in which the Doctor and Donna have to fight off with its huon particles in The Runaway Bride. I do not own this figure, and quite honestly do not want to! Despite it having quite realistic features, I dont think it is a good piece to have in a collection!
♥Judoon The Judoon are the first creatures we meet in Series 3 when the Doctor and Martha try to work out why the rain is up in Smith And Jones. They are merely guards hunting out any alien presence. I dont have this one, and dont want it. I dont know why this was turned into a figure, as I think it is not a main resemblance to the show. Though, the shape and helmet does look similar to the real thing.
♥Dr Constantine The Doctor met this other Doctor in the World War II episodes. Constantine did a great thing in telling the Doctor all about the strange happenings. This was useful as it helped the Doctor reslove the problem. Unfortunately, Constantine was hit by the disease too. I think it is odd that this figure was not released until near the end of Series 3, over two years since it made an appearance. I do not own it, and do not want it. This figure comes complete with cane.
♥The Empty Child The Empty Child aka Jamie was the little boy that started off the curse in World War II. His chilling words "Are You My Mummy?" sent shivers right through out the nation. Luckily the Doctor found his money and saved the world. This figure is quite cute, it is little and looks realistic, complete with gas mask. Though I think it is odd that is can be bought in the same pack as the Pig Pilot!
♥ Gelth Zombie The gelth zombie appeared in The Unquiet Dead in Series 1, when the Gelth took over a large amount of corpse and controlled them using gas. This particualr zombie even made its way to the theatre! I do not own this figure, but I might buy it as it is from an amazing episode. Though, again, it is weird that is is released so far into Series 3 when in actual fact it is from the beginning of Series 1!
♥Novice Hame The Doctor first meets Novice Hame in New Earth. She is working at the hospital, looking after the Face Of Boe. The the Doctor comes across her again in Gridlock. She is the only cat nurse left and is looking after the Face Of Boe still, until he sadly 'snuffs it'. This figure is the new Novice Hame. She is not wearing her traditional white cloak, but the grey one she was seen wearing in Gridlock. I think it would be good if her face was slightly furry.
♥Martha Jones Martha becomes the Doctor's latest companion in Series 3, and falls for his ways. Together, she and the Doctor save the world several times and make a great pair. This slightly rubbery figure shows Martha with her classic dark hair towelled up, wearing her trademark red leather jacket. I dont own this, and dont want to. I dont think it looks much like Martha.
♥Face Of Boe The Doctor meets the Face Of Boe three times. First it is when he acquaints him on Satelleite 5, then again in the hospital in New Earth. Finally the Doctor tries all he can to save him from dying in Gridlock, but sadly does not succeed and Face Of Boe passes away. In the last episode in Series 3, we discover an amazing thing : The Face Of Boe is Captain Jack! This is quite a recent figure and is very updated! With its lifelike shell and facial features, the Face Of Boe comes complete with moving mouth! I am definitely going to buy this and add it to my collection!
♥Clockwork Man The Doctor has to fight off the presence of many clockwork droids in 17th century France. They are thirsty for human parts to rebuild their ship, and wish for the brain of a French princess. I dont think I have actually seen the five inch clockwork droid figure, or if I have, it would be only once. It is not a common figure, so I shall not get it for my collection.
♥Ood The Ood are the guards and slaves on board a ship which is about to be sucked into a Black Hole. When The Beast possesses these harmless creatures, they turn into menacing mindless monsters which are set out to kill. The paint work on this figure is a bit simple and based on only a few shades. There is not that much detail. Though, the position in which it is clutching the orb makes up for it!
♥Dalek Sec Dalek Sec takes human form in Daleks In Manhattan, and in some ways becomes friends with the Doctor - he starts to see sence and loses his dalek nature. But the still-dalek Caan turns against his leader and exterminates Sec. I think it is a bit weird that human sec was turned into a figure. I think the whole idea of it ruins the opinion of the daleks and their nature. Though on a posotive note, the features of this figure are quite accurate.
♥Lilith Lilith is a Carryanite from The Shakespeare Code. The Carryanites use a mix of Voodoo and name-rhymes to control people and kill them. But they are no match for the Doctor, and Lilith's plan backfires when he takes charge and fits the pieces of the puzzle together to save the future of the human race. Lilith is one of my favourite characters from Series 3, so I'd be expected to purchase her figure, but I am not going to do this. I feel that her facial features are not life like, and she looks merely like a typical witch.
♥Mickey Smith Mickey was Rose Tyler's caring and considerate boyfriend before she met the Doctor. They they drifted apart whilst Rose was away, but by the end of Series 2, they came together and Mickey went with the Tylers to the Parallel Universe. I dont own this figure, but I do think it looks quite details and lifelike! It is worth a buy for any collector!
***** Although there are a lot of figures currently out, I feel there should be a few more key character figures;
>Jackie Tyler >9th Doctor (not part of the regeneration set) >Jabe (The End Of The World) >Pete Tyler >Sarah Jane Smith (School Reunion)
***** The figures are not expensive either, with a RRP of just 6.99! They are well worth that price if you love Doctor Who!
***** So, will we be seeing these figures selling for hundreds of pounds later in the future? Well, maybe not, but they are fantastic to own if you love Doctor Who!
