With the regeneration and revival of the legendary Doctor Who TV series in 2005, it was strikingly obvious that a modern merchandising campaign was going to be rolled out as soon as the first episode had finished airing as new generation of fans of had effectively been captured. In my mind Season 1 starring Christopher Eccleston as the Time Travelling Doctor gave us some good episodes to further the legacy of the Doctor.
In the=is Season there were a number of two part stories, the second two-parter of the Season was called 'The Empty Child' and 'The Doctor Dances' and this story, split across two episodes introduced us to Captain Jack Harkness for the first time. It was quite a frightening story with a lone child in a gasmask roaming war torn London looking for his Mummy, come Monday morning it was an episode that was still fresh in the minds of younger children.
One of the guest stars
in this story was Richard Wilson, better known as Victor Meldrew, who played Doctor Constantine., a medical Doctor based at Albion Hospital where the Doctor and Rose visit towards the end of the first part, and although he was a minor figure he was left with a lot of explaining to do by the end of the second part due to the Doctor's success in resolving the issues at hand.
The one that amazed me when I saw the figure was the actual quality itself, now you have bare in mind that I used to collect the early Star Wars figures and to be honest they were not as detailed as this is, manly die to the fact that it was over 25 years ago. However the Constantine figure is easily recognisable as the character, mainly due to the fact that it looks like the character from the episode in the facial area, right down to the facial jowls and wrinkles in the skin. Also the colourisation of the various facial areas allows the features to stand out more and allows a shape to be defined. Even Richard Wilson's moles have been accounted for in the mould!!
Making an assumption here, but I think it's safe to assume that the actor was actually involved in the cast of this figure as this detail would not be something that can easily be captured, I should think that something like a scan would have been performed to capture minute details. Clothing wise, again it is exactly as portrayed on screen, Green and red patterned tie with a white collared shirt and black waistcoat, with a normal long white medical coat. The attention to detail is superfluous on all accounts and very impressive, even creases in the dark green trousers have been captured and looking closely, you can see the figure has a character of its own, one that has been lifted from TV series.
The stance of the character is also perfect as the addition of a walking stick, or cane, which has been added as well. This is important part for the character as his cane was the catalyst for waking up the infected patients in the Hospital ward. In the episode as well the character succumbs to the disease that is spreading and quite quickly metamorphosis's into a similar state of mind as the patients is looking after, this has been accounted for as well as an additional head has been supplied with gas mask attached, again the detail is completely spot on to that of the episode.
The figure itself has a total of 14 points of articulation that means his arms can be bent at the elbow to go forwards and again in the area of the bicep allowing the forearm to be twisted and go out to the side and again at the shoulder to raise the arms above the head so full 360 degree movement can be achieved, The legs bend at the knee in the normal fashion.
Personally I refuse to remove items like this from the packaging as I am taking a gamble in buying these hoping they go up in value in the future, as in the past I have opened the packaging to find that a boxed version would be worth at least 6 times what the unboxed version is valued at. So I won't be opening this in a hurry!! The packaging also is quite detailed and has the distinctive Doctor Who lozenge emblem on a Orange and Yellow background with a picture of the character on the front with the figure encased in the standard type of bubble packaging.
Although these would be available in the High Street, in my opinion the best place to get these would be on line as they are slightly cheaper than places like WH Smith's or even Tesco, where they can cost £6 to £8. On-line these are cheaper, but you will also incur potage and packaging costs at some sites. Other figures in this release cover a lot of the characters encountered in the first series such as the Gelth Zombie and the Auton's as well as The Ninth Doctor and Rose.
