With the regeneration and revival of the legendary DoctorWho TV series in 2005, it was strikingly obvious that a modern merchandising campaign was going to be rolled out as soon as the first episode had finished airing as new generation of fans of had effectively been captured. In my mind Season 1 starring Christopher Eccleston as the Time Travelling Doctor gave us some good episodes to further the legacy of the Doctor.
In the=is Season there were a number of two part stories, the second two-parter of the Season was called 'The Empty Child' and 'The Doctor Dances' and this story, split across two episodes introduced us to Captain Jack Harkness for the first time. It was quite a frightening story with a lone child in a gasmask roaming war torn London looking for his Mummy, come Monday morning it was an episode that was still fresh in ...
Advantages: Great stuff Disadvantages: None really
Now well into the second series of the revamped DoctorWho, we see the writers take a bit of a different tack with the plotlines. We have another double episode story with The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, and then a foray into an episode where the Doctor and Rose are not greatly featured, with a band of other actors taking the top billing for the episode, in Love and Monsters. This is a welcome change from the norm.
The Impossible Planet
The Doctor and Rose are sucked out of the TARDIS and onto a spaceship, which they find out is being held in orbit around a black hole. The ship has a small crew of humans running it, and cannot explain why the black hole has not swallowed them up. The ship also has a horde of a slave race known as the Ood on board, controlled by the crew. They are drilling into the surface of the nearby ...
Advantages: Great rebirth of the doctor Disadvantages: None really
For the past 4 years or so, my wife has consistently watched the revival of DoctorWho, first with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, then with David Tennant taking over the role. She tried to persuade me to watch them, but it is something that I had never really been fussed with. Growing up at my parents' house, I would occasionally watched a rerun of one of the older Doctor Whos, such as Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, and I found them interesting, but I didn't really follow them and the aliens just seemed farcical to me.
Fast forward to last year. The fourth series ended in what my wife called a gobsmacking double episode that made her go out and buy the box set of the series starring Christopher Eccleston as the doctor. It was her intention to make me watch the last four series in as short a time as possible. So, we sat down ...

At the heart of the ruined city of Arcopolis is the Fortress. It's a brutal structure placed here by one of the sides in a devastating intergalactic war that's long ended. Fifteen years ago, the entire population of the planet was killed in an instant by the weapon housed deep in the heart of the Fortress. Now only the ghosts remain. The Doctor arrives, and determines to fight his way past the Fortress' automatic defences and put the weapon beyond use. But he soon discovers he's not the only person in Arcopolis. What is the true nature of the weapon? Is the planet really haunted? Who are the Eyeless? And what will happen if they get to the weapon before the Doctor? The Doctor has a fight on his hands. And this time he's all on his own.

Some truly disturbing stuff in this one - as usual juxtaposed with scenes both refreshing and vibrant. The back-story is easier to digest for those picking this up before the others too...
If you've become used to the slick city beat normally walked by Ms. Blake and friends, the open air might spin your head a bit. Shouldn't think it will be a big adjustment though. You can take the girl out of the city... (*)
