Documents to go is a software package designed for users of handheld devices who require the functionality of a program like Microsoft Office. Although many handheld windows driven devices have a mini version of Office installed PDA's not running a Microsoft environment have in the past found it almost impossible to find a suitable program with which to transfer files of different compatibility. Problems usually occur whilst trying to open a program created by a different piece of software than the one used to create the program.
Those clever guys at Dataviz have come up with a solution. I am using the palm version and have found it to be extremely versatile and exceptionally useful. The software creates an environment whereby you can use Microsoft Office to create all you files. You simply save them, as normal and the software will do the rest.
The software is compatible with all aspects of office including PowerPoint, so we are talking about Excel, Word, and Microsoft Outlook, although certain Palm models are having a bit of a problem with the Outlook side of things.
On opening the software you are presented with a pretty basic looking screen, being that there are basically only three panels. The top panel contains all the files that are physically held on the PDA's internal memory. The panel directly below this contains all the files currently on the installed memory card if there is one. The final panel on the right gives the details of any file highlighted. It will give the file size and name and an address to where it is stored on both the handheld device and your hard-drive. Therefore if you accidentally delete from one platform it can be easily restored from the other. For this reason it is advisable to synchronise your PDA with your desktop frequently, daily if possible.
Files on your PDA are automatically transferred on sync with your PC, and are saved in the PDA format, by double clicking on the selected file in the chosen panel it will be opened by your PC software i.e. MS Office. From here you can save it as a normal Office file in the normal Office format for use by others if required. To transfer files from your PC to the PDA simply open the folder containing the file and drag and drop into the panel you wish to transfer it to be that the internal memory or the memory card. Files on the memory card can not be read if the card is inserted into a PC card reader they can only be read by Dos to Go during the synchronisation process where they are converted by the software as required. The process is very quick even for fairly large size files, and as of yet I have not met with any errors.
Since my Palm system has no links with Microsoft and I use Office a lot then you can appreciate how handy such a piece of software can be. I just love it and think it is an exceptional piece of software and what's more the basic version comes free with the Palm system. Apart from the Excel and Word conversion it has the usual spell check and thesaurus. There are other add ons which I have also found useful those being, PDF to go, PICS to go, and Slideshow to go, which is a simplified version of Powerpoint for the handheld.
All in all I'm very impressed with Documents to go and would happily recommend it to anyone with a system with which it is compatible. There are too many handhelds to mention them all so my advice to you should you feel this might be of use is to visit the dataviv website at www.dataviv.com.
