In 2007 I bought a pair of prescription Givenchy sunglasses from Dollond & Aitchison. The frames were priced £178 and the lenses £80, total £258. I wore them in summer 2007 and 2008 but this year... more

Advantages Advantages local touch, customer service

Disadvantages Disadvantages very much on the expensive side

I have worn glassed for the best part of 25 years. I also wore contact lenses for a little while until I couldn't be bothered any longer and wore neither, glasses or contacts. I am now of an age where my eyesight is naturally going off skewer and I have to wear glasses all the time - while before it was only for TV, computer work and driving. I went to Dollond & Aitchison for a check up (mainly because I was on an assignment). I booked an eye test and was seen promptly on the day and the correct time. It was the first time I went to my local D&A store, I always avoided them as they tend to be ... more

Advantages Advantages Friendly and efficient service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey, but no more than anywhere else. All eye-care is expensive.

I didn't intend to write a review on Dollond & Aitchison, but browsing the categories and coming across some of the opinions and experiences here and on other review sites, I felt I needed to redress the balance a little bit. I first registered with D&A about 8 years ago, when a money-off voucher tempted me away from a local independent (overpriced) optician. I'm short-sighted and get both my specs and contact lenses from them (via the Contact Lenses by Post scheme). Over the years, I have moved around a lot and transferred my records between Middlesbrough and Newcastle a few times without any ... more

Advantages Advantages stylish shopping for the goggle-eyed

I had to go to Dolland & Aitcheson today for a mystery shop.(OH BUMMER it's not a mystery anymore is it?) This particular branch of D & A is in a large market town in N.E. Wales which sounds rather like rectum which is quite apt really because if god were going to give Wales an enema that is where he would probably stick the tube. Anyway I guess that one branch of D & A is pretty much the same as another. And this one is in a prime location, right in the centre of town and almost adjacent to M& S hence lots of pedestrian traffic. The outside of the shop is very impressive and imposing and its ... more

    Advantages Advantages None really

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor customer service

Very, very unhappy with D&A. I would NEVER go there again. Due an eye test & I wanted some really good varifocals. First prescription was way different to my last one, which seemed odd to me as I was still pretty happy with my old glasses. New glasses were dreadful, I couldn't see properly. Much messing about and they finally provided a new pair: better, but still not as good as the old ones. Third attempt ditto. And all 3 prescriptions were different - why? Anyway I ended up going to another optician, who sorted me out spot on in one go. But I am now £320 down, and D&A are refusing any refund ... more

Advantages Advantages Good service, reasonable prices, great aftercare.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not in every town.

I have used D and A for 17 years and now my family also use them. Whichever branch has been my nearest, I have found consistently good advice, help and prices with friendly, knowledgeable staff who "know their stuff". If a problem occurs you can always go in and they will sort it for you. They have a good range of products which they guide you through, including analysis of your face shape to help you decide on frames and the chance to see an image on computer of what you look like in different frames (very useful for those of us who can't see themselves in the mirror in empty frames!) My son ... more
