I'm a great believer in doing things easily if I can and it's only occasionally that I actually have loads of time to prepare a meal from scratch although I do love proper cooking when I get the chance. I also find that it works out much cheaper to uses sauces like these rather than buying all the separate ingredients too and as we're a family very much on a budget then this has to take priority when shopping is done.
Dolmio have created lots of different sauces for pasta which come in a variety of containers including jars, little plastic tubs and microwavable express packets like my favourite kind which is Creamy Carbonara although I do usually add it and heat in a pan rather than the microwave. I will go into more details of this product later as it's the one I use most but first I want to enlighten you a bit more about the full Dolmio range.
One of the most famous sauces that Dolmio do has to be the gorgeous range of Bolognese made from mainly tomatoes. Now tomatoes are a fantastic product which contain the antioxidant Lycopene which is what makes tomatoes have that lovely red colour and best of all is believed to prevent certain types of cancer so what better reason can you have for eating bolognese.
300g of tomatoes are packed into every 500g jar of these bolognese sauces and there are 5 different varieties to choose from in the original bolognese range which include a light version for the people out there worried about fat content (this contains only 0.1g per 100g) and one that is extra spicy for the more adventurous of you out there as well as one with extra mushrooms and another with extra onion & garlic.
If you like your bolognese to contain that little bit extra though there is also the new chunky range which has Sweet Pepper, Mushroom & Courgette, Roasted Onion & Garlic or Mediterranean Vegetables to choose from. Whichever one you choose to use though they are very simple to use and only require you to be able to open the jar (which can sometimes be a chore for us weaklings out there) and pour the sauce over your choice of mince. A portion of spaghetti goes delightfully well and is a firm favourite in our house. The original sauces sell for around £1.15 for a 500g jar and the chunkier variety sells for around £1.40. Of course you can be a bit more adventurous with these sauces and I will include a couple of my favourite recipe ideas at the end.
Lasagne is another one we love and for anyone who isn't familiar with it this delight it is made up of layers of flat pasta sheets and mince with tomato and white sauce too. You can either choose to use a bolognese sauce to do this or use Dolmio's specially prepared tomato sauce which has a mixture of basil and sweet garlic blended in with the tomatoes to give this it's lovely flavour. Lasagne wouldn't be Lasagne though without the gorgeous white sauce to help you layer your sheets of pasta and although I have tried a few other brands of this, Dolmio for me has to be the creamiest one around. This is another dish that is easy and quick to prepare and tastes fantastic. Both sauces sell at around £1.30 for a 500g or 470g jar. This can also be bought as a mealpack with both jars and some lasagne sheets too.
The next range of sauces available are the Stir in sauces which come in a plastic tub. I haven't actually tried these yet but there are some really tempting flavours including Creamy Carbonara, Italian Spicy Chilli, Roasted Vegetables, Slow Roasted Garlic & Tomato, Smokey Bacon & Tomato, Spicy Pepperoni & Tomato, Sun-Dried Tomato, Sweet Pepper and Sun-Dried Tomato Light. The flavour that interests me most here is the Pepperoni variety as I love this type of sausage and mixed with red peppers and tomatoes it sounds delicious. These can be bought for around £1.25 for 150g tub and as the name suggests you simply stir into whichever pasta dish you are making.
The last range of actual sauces are the Express range which are presented to us in packet form which can either be heated up in the microwave in 2 to 3 minutes or in a pan and then poured over your pasta. The flavours to choose from are Creamy Carbonara, Creamy Mushroom, Rich Tomato with Basil Pesto, Roasted Vegetable, Spicy Italian Chilli, Sun-Ripened Tomato & Basil, Bolognese, Bolognese with Extra Mushroom and Bolognese with Extra Onion & Garlic. My favourite and the sauce I use most from Dolmio is, as earlier mentioned, the Creamy Carbonara and this is the form I like to buy it in. There are 2 size packs that you can buy in this range the single portion 150g size which costs around £1.10 and the larger 330g 2/3 portion which sells for around £1.50. I tend to buy the larger size as even if I am only using part of it the beauty of this is that it can be stored in a refrigerator once opened for up to 2 days so it works out a lot cheaper for us this way. It is very easy to use and if cooking in the microwave you just snip the corner and cook in the packaging although it can be extremely hot when you remove it and you have to leave it to stand whilst heating the pasta. I find it just as easy to heat in a pan though and this again just takes a couple of minutes. After it is ready you simply pour it over the pasta and you have a deliciously tasty hot meal.
The carbonara variety has ham, cream, cheese and garlic in it and tastes delicious. I've found some of the other brand's carbonara sauces to be a bit bland but the flavours compliment each other to perfection here and the delicate garlic flavouring isn't as strong as with some other dishes so there isn't quite so much need to worry about the dreaded garlic breath for the rest of the evening. Unless that is you serve it with a side helping of garlic bread which is what we usually do as we tend to have it when we aren't venturing out.
As well as the sauces there is also a range of pasta bakes available which can be poured over cooked pasta and baked in the over for a slightly different way of enjoying the Italian dishes. There are 4 varieties to choose from and they are Creamy Mushroom, Creamy Tomato, Sun-Dried Tomato and Tomato and Cheese. Now this is one area of the Dolmio range that I'm not so keen on. It's not that I find anything wrong as such with the flavour of the sauces but I'm not so keen on the oven-baking bit as I find this tends to make the pasta too soft for my liking. They sell for around £1.40 for a 500g jar.
The Dolmio name is well known and is brought to life on the advertisements by a lovely traditional Italian family all centred round the fact the these sauces are as good as 'Mama' makes -well nearly. Their friendly and lovable characteristics really make their products spring to life and the web site is excellent for getting recipe ideas from. This is where I located the recipes below which I had to try myself. As well as this you can sign up for news from Dolmio and you can get money off vouchers to print off if you want to try some of these products for yourselves. There are also some nutritional facts on here as well as Mama's question time where you can find all sorts of useful and fun tips.
I will leave you with my favourite recipes for these delicious sauces, I hope you try them and enjoy.
Hawaiian Sausages to serve with Mash for 4 people
You need, 1 jar Original Bolognese Sauce, 8-10 Sausages, 2 large slices of leg ham and a small tin of pineapple chunks
This is a very simple but tasty meal and shows you don't need to use pasta for these pasta sauces. Cook the sausages in a large frying pan and cut up the slices of ham. Cut the sausages into pieces of around 1cm and put them back in the pan along with your pasta sauce. After simmering for a couple of minutes add the ham and pineapple and bring this to the boil. Simmer for a further 4-5 minutes and serve with a lovely helping of mashed potatoes. ***************** Spicy Italian Sausage for 4 people
You need 1 380g Dolmio Express Spicy Italian Chilli Sauce, 250g dried spaghetti, 1 red pepper cut into strips, 175g Salami or other spicy sausage of your choice, 15mls of olive oil and some basil to garnish.
Firstly fry the red pepper and salami in your oil for 3-4 minutes before adding your sauce to the pan. Heat this slowly until hot and leave to simmer. Cook your spaghetti for around 10-12 minutes until al dente (cooked but still slightly firm) then drain and serve the spaghetti before topping in off with your sausage and sauce mix. Top it off with some basil and grated Parmesan if you have it.
Advantages: Quick and easy. Tasty. Disadvantages: None.
...to write about Creamy Tomato Dolmio Pasta Bake after enjoying it for my dinner yesterday. So, I started by doing a bit of research online, looking for the history of the company etc. To my dismay I couldn't find much, only that it is by Al Dolmio and is a brand which is manufactured by Mars, made by Masterfoods. Even though Dolmio is a very Italian sounding name it isn't actually sold in Italy.
So, I am reviewing the Creamy Tomato flavour pasta ... ...& Cheese, Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables and Creamy Carbonara.

Well Dolmio stir in sauces are just delicious, you have a range of Flavours to choose from as well.
You can go for the normal Original one, or try the extra mushroom one, or even the extra garlic flavour. The choice is endless, you can choose one of these and then add your own ingrediants to spice it up even more, some more peppers here, a onion there, and you can then make it taste even better.
So i am sat in the room, and ...

...this isn't a novelty.
Dolmio sauce is about as authentic as a morris minor being itallian!
It's not that it's awful, and it's even okayish for my palete;but for an authentic recipe,a bit of you know, tarting up,contribution and sweat will need to be added, to satisfy my anglo-itallian family.
With a little fresh onion, garlic and parmesan cheese fresh from the local (and hideously expensive but incomprable delicatessan shop)it's lovverrlly!
With ... ...(obviously a sufggestion that old dolmio is well known European-wise,with fingers in at least three other pies.)
I have to say, that the itallians athourities 'to be' have probably told "dolly" (as I like to call it) to: "bogg off!!" as I don't recall seeing this product in the homeland back in the 80's when we last lived there..
if anyone knows otherwise, then please inform me and accept my 'umble apology.ok?

...pasta and a jar of Dolmio Cheesy Tomato Pasta Bake sauce.
The jar itself was 490g and cost me around 1.50 pounds(I can’t give an exact figure as I am working in Australian $ but I did check it out on the Tesco.com website and its around the same price at the moment). It had the green lid with the Italian flag on the top, and a green label with it on again just to make the point clear that it was actually in fact Italian, (even though this ... ...all though my opinion of Dolmio pasta sauce has been has been swayed and although I enjoy cooking and like to make my own sauces this was a great time saver and a good store cupboard item. I would buy this again for a quick, cheap meal. I also noticed a creamy mushroom flavour, which I will definetly be experimenting with.

Reviews which might be of interest for "Dolmio Pasta Sauces"
I enjoy a good pasta dish as I find it easy to prepare and also very filling. I tend to cheat with packet or jar sauces though as I don't want to start from scratch in the evenings and look for convenience rather than the freshness of preparing a sauce myself.
That's why I love Dolmio's range of stir in sauces. You simply cook the pasta and drain the water, then empty the pot of sauce and stir in. Simple. The sauce comes in a small plastic pot, with foil lid. Around this is a card label with the product information. So these are really easy to store in my cupboards as they stack easily on top of one another.
The sweet pepper sauce is a tasty alternative to the usual tomato sauces you find in jars. Although this sauce does contain tomatoes too, the pepper taste prominently in the sauce, as do the onions. Its a mild sauce ...
Advantages: Tastes lovely and is simple to make Disadvantages: None really x
I have just made a really simple yet completely delicious lunch and I thought that since I am here I may as well share it with you.
I have recently taken to buying Dolmio jars of pastasauce, then main reason being that as I live on my own, they are easy and cheap and they have a long life, so I do not have to worry if they sit in my cupboard for a while.
Where, and how much?
Dolmio is one of the most popular and largely advertised brands for home cooked Italian, therefore it is easy to pick up most Dolmio products in nearly all shops. I shop on Asda online, but occasionally I use the Co-Operative as I have a small one just a five minute walk from my house, Both stores sell the pasta bake range at about £1.66 for a large jar which contains 500g.
It is easy in larger shops like Asda to pick them up in deals like two for two ...
Advantages: Convenient Simple to Prepare Disadvantages: Not as Good as in Italian Restaurants
Pasta is very good for you. Even professional footballers these days have foresaken their unhealthy fry ups for pasta dishes. Of course one of the most famous of all pasta dishes just has to be Spaghetti Bolognese. this wonderful culinary gift from Italy originated in Bologna, which many consider to be the gastronomic capital of that lovely country.
Now it is easy to prepare Spaghetti Bolognese or variants using Fettichine or other pasta. Go down to your local grocers or supermarkets and buy a colourful jar of Dolmio Bolognese Sauce. These sauces come in a variety of flavours including Tomato,Mushroom, Spicy Peppers, Basil, Mushroom and Basil, Tomato and Oregano,Tomato Reduced Salt and Tomato with Extra Garlic.
