Advantages Soft, creamy and moisturising

Disadvantages A bit messy!

Dove soap has been a favourite of mine for quite a few years now, and has been around longer than many people think. Recently the Dove phenomenon has reached new levels as shower gel, moisturiser and hair products have also been added to its impressive collection of beauty products. That said, Dove soap is the original grandfather of them all and rightly so!

The white oval shaped bar is said to contain ¼ moisturising cream, which is in contrast to normal bar soaps which can be very drying on the skin, as most do not contain any specific moisturising properties. However, I do not use this soap on my face, preferring a specialised wash or lotion instead, so I cannot comment on the effect it has on sensitive skin on the face itself. I do find that my skin is a lot less scaly and dry as a result of using the soap, and I do notice the difference if I go away somewhere for a few days and do not use Dove. My skin becomes dry again, and seems to thirst for its usual crème soap!

Dove soap
Appearance wise the soap is white and embossed with the Dove logo on both sides and it is approximately 8cm in length. According to the white and blue box the soap comes it, Dove soap is mild and pH neutral, which indicates that the soap is kind to the skin and does not dry it out. Science was never my strong point at school, and the advertisement for this product shows the soap being submitted to a litmus test to determine its acidity rating. Way over my head I’m afraid, but I know this soap is kind to my skin and moisturises it well, so the pH rating is not that important to me.

Moving on to the smell: Its perfume is quite strong but not overpowering and can be described in my opinion as a combination of sherbet, vanilla, citrus and I often got waves of pleasant smelling washing powder! After use, the smell lingers on your skin for at least an hour before gradually fading. When it is just in conjunction with other Dove products such as the body cream the smell does tend to linger a little longer than if it is used on its own.

The soap works up a nice lather, and is easily rubbed into the skin and rinsed off without leaving any residue. The creaminess of the soap cleanses your skin as well as moisturising it, so that there is no need for additional soaps or shower gels. It does not remain that way for long though, as I often find most moisturising skin products do not hydrate my skin for as long as they claim.

One obvious disadvantage is the fact that the soap leaves quite a mess once it has been in contact with water, leaving bubbles all around the bar and your sink, if it is not washed off properly after use. This is why I normally use it when I have a shower, rather than on the sink as a handwashing soap.

I find that on average the soap lasts for about two weeks for a family of three when it is used daily. This is a lot less than normal soap, but I put this down to its added moisturisers when it comes into contact with water. I sometimes think that if it is left on or near water, the soap itself disintegrates a little as the water absorbs it but perhaps this is just my overactive imagination!

I love Dove products, soft, mild, creamy and although the smell is a bit strong like you say it is lovely in my opinion. It must have been this Dove cream bar that first introduced me to Dove products and I still sometimes buy it although I prefer their bottled soap with pump nowadays -less messy! Thanks for a great review, it had all the details and info in it that were needed.
