Advantages Advantages Not as harmful to skin as caustic cleaners

Disadvantages Disadvantages It doesn't work on anything but the lightest grime

To guide me through the mass of competing manufacturers' claims, I have devised a simple system. It's known as the Silverback Product Uselessness Rating Test, or SPURT for short. It involves looking for certain features on an item's promotion or packaging. The main ones are: 1. Spurious medical or academic credentials: any product implying that it's made or invented by a doctor sets off my bullshit detector. The same goes for people who make too much of real or invented qualifications: 'Dr' Gillian McKeith being a case in point. 2. Manufacturers who need to state that their product "really ... more

    Advantages Advantages Doesn't smell

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't be used on aluminium or self cleaning ovens

There are some things in life that irk me; rude people, cyclists going the wrong way down one-way streets, people who don't indicate at roundabouts instead preferring to use telepathy and having to clean my cooker. Once every other month, usually on a Sunday, I could be found in the kitchen donning an apron and a pair of rubber gloves scrubbing the bottom of my oven like fury but there was always a little bit of un-identifiable burnt on sticky-something that wouldn't budge that would evade me. I tried aerosol oven cleaners that involved wearing goggles, breathing apparatus and industrial ... more

Advantages Advantages NO NASTY FUMES, MAKES LIGHT WORK OF HEAVY GROUND IN DIRT

Disadvantages Disadvantages CAN'T BE USED ON SELF CLEANING OVENS

One of my most hated household tasks is cleaning the oven. The oven cleaners I have used in the past have either been in cream form which cannot cope with the dried on grease and grime, or ones containing harsh chemicals that burn your throat whenever you stick your head near the oven to give a good scrub. It doesn't take much to twist my arm into buying new products, especially if it promises to make my life easier. So when I see Dr Beckmann Rescue Oven Cleaner advertised on the television I am sucked right in and make a mental note to get this on my next shopping trip. While in Tesco, I head ... more

    Advantages Advantages really works

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Cleaning the oven is one of the worst household tasks around. It’s a dirty, labour-intensive, thoroughly loathsome job and I do it as infrequently as I can get away with. I have horrible memories of things called ‘oven pads’ my mum used to use, and of creams that don’t clean and other liquids that fill the kitchen with fumes and make your membranes feel like they’re on fire. I was delighted, therefore, when I saw Dr. Beckmann’s Rescue oven cleaner in the shops. At £2.91 for 375 ml it was considerably more expensive than others I’ve tried, but the words ‘No nasty smells, not harmful, and it ... more

Advantages Advantages Great price, effective, nozzle spray, gel formula

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

This week I've had that horrible task that everyone dreads of cleaning the oven. I have to clean the oven every couple of months, despite giving it a wipe round after every couple of uses, and I often change the product that I use to do the job. I have found up until this point that the Oven Pride range was the best on the market, but it's one of those products that I hate paying full price for in the supermarket and if it's not for sale in Home Bargains, then I will buy an alternative. On my last visit, they didn't have the Oven Pride cleaner available so I decided to buy the Dr Beckmann Oven ... more
