I had wanted the game Brain Training for a while but didn`t have a Nintendo DS. The solution that my husband and I came up with was, buy my son a DS for Christmas and me the Brain Training game. It has been used very much as a family game. We all have a go. Admittedly though, I am the best, probably because I use it the most. It may train my brain, but it has also turned into something of an addiction.
Brain training is a game intended for use with the Nintendo DS. It is supposed to tell you how old your brain is. It is designed for daily use with a variety of exercises to make your brain perform different functions. There is a brain age check on there that is used daily. The maximum is 80 and the minimum 20. The best age that it is possible to be is 20. When first using the game, it can take a short while to get used to it, just simple things like writing with the pen and speaking. When performing each test, the idea is to get quicker each time when brain training. Not only does it show your time, it also shows a relative speed, walking, cycling, driving, flying and rocket. Obviously the desirable speed to attain is rocket. It is easy to see how an addiction can be formed.
The Brain Training was invented by a Dr Kawashima. You are expected to check your brain age every day. Once you have done this you commence the training exercises or do them first. Once you have participated in the training, you receive a stamp which indicates that you have performed the exercises that day. They only record the results the first time. You can practice as many times as you like but if you achieve record status the second or third time on the same day, it will not be recorded.
The test.
The age test will ask you to perform a random 3 functions which are designed to make different parts of your brain work. It could be 3 of, 20 calculations, word memory, quickly recognising colours. The brain age check can be performed either speaking into the DS or by using the pen. Different tests are offered depending on which you select.
The game also has sudoku. It is easy to play, as it is electronic, it tells you when you have solved the puzzle. There is also a cheat mode if you are still learning. It then lets you know each time you are correct and it allows you up to three times to get it wrong.
The Negatives.
Whilst the game is very clever and receptive, it is also open to errors. I find errors particularly when using the voice commands. It quite often does not hear correctly and marks you down as being wrong when in fact you are right. This can also happen when using the pen, though less frequently. Sometimes it misinterprets numbers or even letters. This can be very frustrating.
All is all I highly recommend the Brain Training game for use with the Nintendo DS. I use it every day and it only takes a few minutes. I am getting better at each puzzle. It does make you highly competitive though and if your time is slower than the previous day, it can be very annoying. It has become something of an addiction, though a good addiction if there is such a thing. Yes I have reached age 20, but why can`t I attain that age every day? Once you have completed a few puzzles, they allow you to unlock a few more. I have played all of them now though and I am itching to buy the More Brain Training. Brain Training is entertaining, makes you feel as if you are doing yourself some good and a better addiction than some that I could mention.
