Dr Oetker's is a German family firm, founded in 1891 originally producing baking powder. They began selling frozen pizzas in Germany in 1970 and brought the Ristorante range to the UK in 2002.

Varieties available:
• Mozzarella
• Speciale (Ham and Salami)
• Pollo (chicken)
• Hawaii (Ham and pineapple)
• Funghi (mushroom)
• Quatro Formaggi (four cheese)
• Prosciutto (prociutto ham)

Usually I eat Pizzas in restaurants or occasionally from a take away place such as Dominos. I am not really a fan of shop bought pizzas finding the base sometimes has the taste and texture of soggy cardboard, and the toppings a bit stingy and never getting to the edge. A while back I tried Dr Oetker's Bistro range which were small lunchtime sized pizza baguettes, so upon my last visit to Sainsburys I purchased the Funghi Ristorante pizza from the freezer section. The pizza cooks in a fan oven for 10-11 minutes from frozen and retailed for £1.99.

When I took the pizza out of the pack (it is in cellophane within its box) I was impressed as the mushrooms went right to the edge. The pizza was flat with no crust so, although not piled high, when I put it on the lower shelf of my oven (as instructed) I put a baking tray with some foil on it underneath to catch any drips. It was just as well I did as when the pizza was done and I slid it out some of the cheese and tomato on the edge dripped off (naturally missing the baking tray).

Now for the taste test. The base was crisp and not soggy, and easy to cut. The cheese was Edam alongside the usual mozzarella and at the beginning I liked it, but went off the taste by the end. Whilst the mushrooms tasted OK they were in a lot of oil and the greasiness of the pizza made it quite unpleasant by the time I was half way though, and in the end the last quarter went in the bin leaving me with that "I've eaten something really crap" feeling in my stomach for the rest of the evening.

Final verdict: While the initial taste was good, and the pizza base and ingredients appear to be of a good quality, the oil and vegetable fats seem excessive for the amount of pizza and this means I will be unlikely to purchase this product again.

Nutritional Information for the Funghi pizza (taken from their website, it is not on the box)

per 100g per pizza

Energy (Kj): 989 3609.9

Energy (Kcal): 237 865.1

Protein (g): 7.9 28.8

Carbohydrate (g): 22.5 82.1

Fat (g): 11.9 43.4
Of which saturates: 3.3 12.1

It appears that the Funghi has the second highest fat content after Mozzarella, so I may have just chosen wrong. There is no mention of allergy information on the packet though there is an ingredient list in twelve languages. It also does not mention if the product is suitable for vegetarians. I am assuming that the packaging (if not the product) is produced abroad where the expectations of packet info is not as high as here.

really good review - not my fave brand but they've recently brought out a new one which has a soft, puffy base which is scrumptious. Jacky x
