This is a review on the TV series DragonBall GT, some of you may wander what GT stands for, well for those whom wander, GT stands for Grand Tour. As this TV series is about them getting the Black Star DragonBalls, but I will tell you more about that later in the review. DragonBall GT is the sequel to the classic hit TV series DragonBall Z.
The History Of Saiyans *************************** Goku is a Saiyan (another planets race), he was sent from Planet Vegeta to Planet Earth, so when he becomes older, he will be able to destroy Earth. When there is a full moon, and the Saiyans have their tail, they will go all Oozaroo and transform into this giant ape creature. This only happens when there is a full moon. The Saiyans are a different race, they look like humans but they have some advantages. Like true Saiyans hair does not grow, and when the moon is full, if they look at it, they go Oozaro and turn into a giant ape monster. If you want more info on the Saiyans, check out my Bardok review, which will give you all the info you need. Goku (the main character) is a Saiyan, and he is very powerful. There is a legend that when you get powerful enough; you will turn into a Super Saiyan. When your hair turns gold and your power goes past the limit.
Goku's father was called Bardok, and he was a Saiyan of many talents. He created this ball of light, which can when you focus it, you can throw it in the air and make it seam like it is a full moon, so they can turn into their giant ape creatures when needed too. Bardok has his on feature called Bardok: The Father of Goku, which is about when Freeza (this evil person from this weird planet that wants to take over the universe) takes control of the Saiyans, so he wants them to do his dirty work. Bardok goes to this distant planet with his gang of fighters. Before they go, his gang goes before him as Bardok has hurt himself in a previous battle. His gang of fighters gets destroyed by Freeza's henchman. His henchman is called Dodria. Dodria is a pink spotted alien; he ambushes Bardok's mates, and kills them. When Bardok gets there, his best friend's life was hanging on a thread, and he was able to tell Bardok that Dodria killed them before he passed away.
Bardok found this alien, one left on the planet he was on. This planet race was talented with being able to see into the future, and they gave Bardok this power too. Bardok could see that Freeza was going to destroy all of the Saiyans, and take over their planet. He saw his son Goku as a kid, and when he becomes a man, and his happy family, and when he becomes a Super Saiyan (this is a transformation only Saiyans can do, or half Saiyans). Bardok tries to stop Freeza, but fails, and all the Saiyans get destroyed but a few.
Background Story ********************* DragonBall GT is set 10 years into the future from the end of DragonBall Z. DragonBall GT still has all the main characters from DragonBall Z, but they are older, and in some ways stronger also. Some of you are wandering probably what they hell is DragonBall G... or whatever it is right? Well DragonBall GT is set in a different universe from us, yet still has the planet Earth. There is a race of people called Saiyans, which are super strong people that were first meant to destroy other planets. But Goku (the main character), when he was a kid, bumped his head falling down a cliff, and he did not know who his race was, and his mission on Earth. Goku became a decent child, with abnormal potential and powers. Goku lived with his Grandpa Gohan, who was the old man that found Goku when Goku was sent to Earth as a young child. Anyway at the beginning of GT, Goku is in his 40's, and has many
friends, and has defended the Earth many times.
DragonBall GT is mainly about saving the world, as this evil person called Pealof (bad guy from DragonBall), and he makes Goku small again with the Black Star DragonBalls (more powerful then regular DragonBalls). Then there is a side effect to these DragonBalls, if they are not gathered altogether within a year, the planet the DragonBalls were used on will blow up. So Goku, Gohan plan to set out into the universe to find the DragonBalls, but Vegeta (the hot headed Saiyan prince) has something else to say about that, and sends Goten and Trunks instead of Gohan. But there is even more trouble, Goten does not get onto the ship, as it blasts off before he gets on, but Trunks nor Goku did it. Little miss Pan did (the daughter of Gohan). Pan snuck onto the ship so she could go travelling with her Grandpa Goku, and Trunks, as her life is so boring. She wanted to spice it up a little.
So them three end up searching for the Black Star DragonBalls. But it is not as simple as that, even though they have only a year to do it in, they will have to fight through and battle through a lot to get them. It will not be an easy journey. If you are wandering what DragonBalls are, and what power they have, then you are reading the right paragraph. DragonBalls are seven small spheres that have different number of stars on them. DragonBalls, when all seven are collected, you will be able to grant a wish of your choice. Some people try to wish for Immortality, and some wish back their friends that have died in battle. But the Black Star DragonBalls, now that's a different story, they are way more powerful then the regular DragonBalls on earth, the Black Star DragonBalls have the power all over the universe, that's why they need to search the universe for the DragonBalls. But the DragonBalls on earth are only scattered around the earth, and not the universe, so less hassle, and plus you don't need to collect them all within a year or your planet will blow up, these are safer then the Black Star DragonBalls. Well that's pretty much what DragonBalls are.
There are many bad guys in this TV series even some that put up a big fight against Goku, whom is a very strong saiyan, yet seams to fail. But there is nothing that Goku and his friends cant handle, even if it does seam hopeless. There are 4 sagas in this series, which is a lot less then what is in DragonBall Z and the original DragonBall. There is the Black Star DragonBalls Saga, Baby Saga, Super Android #17 Saga, and Dark Dragons Saga. But considering there are only sixty-four episodes in this entire TV series, then it seams to make more sense. Some people might prefer DragonBall Z to DragonBall GT, like me for one, but DragonBall GT is still worth watching, like I have done.
Characters ************* Here I will tell you about the main characters in this TV series, so if you decide to watch it, you will know whom they are, and what they are like, instead of just guessing and hoping that you got the right answer.
Goku - Goku is a Saiyan, he is able to transform into Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3. He comes up to a final transformation within the DragonBall GT series, but can Goku handle the power? Goku has always saved the earth, even when it was at the brink of defeat. Goku is the father of Gohan and Goten, and the husband of Chi-Chi. He is the Granddad of Pan, and the father-in-law to Videl. Goku trains as much as he can, as he likes to become stronger, and has a very big appetite. Lets just say, he likes to eat, yet he don't get fat. Goku is a strong Saiyan, and is someone that you do not want to mess with.
Gohan - Gohan, the son of Goku, and the proud Father of Pan. Gohan is husband to Videl, and brother to Goten. Gohan's first trainer was Piccolo, whom Gohan likes a lot. Gohan's mother is Chi-Chi, and Gohan also likes to train. But now that Gohan is older, he has given up his fighting ways, and become a… I dread say it, a geek. He now studies a lot, and takes care of his family. Gohan turned Super Saiyan at the young age of twelve, and became the youngest Super Saiyan, until his Brother transformed to Super Saiyan younger then him. Gohan was the one whom stopped the evil Cell (this evil android from DragonBall Z) back in the old days of DragonBall Z. Gohan also can transform into Super Saiyan 2, but did not surpass that, and did not manage to get to Super Saiyan 3 unlike his father.
Trunks - Trunks was one of the youngest Super Saiyans, he transformed to Super Saiyan at the age of seven. He was young in DragonBall Z, and grows up to be the president of Capsule Corp. Capsule Corp is a famous capsule maker, which Bulma use to own. Trunks are the son of Bulma, and the prince of Saiyans Vegeta. He is the brother of Bulla, and his best friend is Goten. Trunks is at the ripe age of twenty-eight in GT. Trunks has managed to transform into Super Saiyan, and that was pretty much it, after that he slacked his training, and kind of did not train again.
Pan - Pan is the granddaughter of Goku, Chi-Chi and Hercule (the champion of earth - yet very weak), she is the daughter of Gohan and Videl. She is a half-Saiyan that has not yet had the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan or anything like that, yet she is very strong for her age of thirteen. She goes on the journey through the universe with Goku and Trunks, and gets them in lots of trouble, not intentionally though, well I don't think so… She goes to school, and tries to get boys to like her, which she normally does, but when she shows off her strength to catch local bad guys, her boyfriends get scared and run.
Goten - Goten is the younger brother of Gohan, and the son of Goku and Chi-Chi. Goten's best friend is Trunks, and his niece is Pan. Goten was the youngest Super Saiyan, he transformed into a Super Saiyan at the age of six, which is very young. Goten now is a ladies man, whom goes on lots of dates. Goten does not do much now, accept hang around, and go on dates like a normal teenager does.
Vegeta - The prince of all Saiyans, the father of Trunks and Bulla, the husband of Bulma, and the Son of King Vegeta, whom died with his planet. Vegeta has always been Goku's rival, and has always wanted to be more powerful then him. Vegeta has managed to become a Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan 2, and also transforms later in the GT series to what Goku does later in the series. If I told you what it was, then it would be spoiling it, yet you probably know already anyway. Vegeta has no known brothers, or sisters, that are alive anyway.
Baby - Baby is the first main bad guy that Goku comes across on his travels. Baby is a mutant spawned by Dr Meuw. He was created to defeat Goku, but fails, Goku has to try his best, and push himself to the limit to defeat this opponent. Baby later in the TV series takes the form of Vegeta, and uses his body to fight Goku, as Vegeta is very powerful and can take the power, and then he is a formidable foe.
Syn Shenron - The main bad guy in the series, and the toughest also, not even Goku's final transformation can defeat him. Goku and Vegeta will have to bring out the big guns to defeat this guy. Syn was spawned from the one Black Star DragonBall, and is the most powerful bad guy Goku has ever faced.
Super Android #17 - Super Android #17 is created by the fusion of Android #17 and Artificial #17. When those to unite and fuse together, they create this unstoppable force. Super Android #17 has no relatives, but Android #17 does, his sister Android #18. In DragonBall Z Android #17 and #18 use to try and kill Goku and his friends, but now Android #18 is one of us good guys, and Android #17 got destroyed, now he has been recreated by the evil Dr Gero.
Dr Gero - Dr Gero, or also known as Android #20 is an evil scientist that wishes to get revenge on Goku. When Goku was younger, Dr Gero had an army called the Red Ribbon Army, and Goku destroyed it, so you see why Dr Gero wants revenge. In DragonBall Z Dr Gero is already destroyed, but in DragonBall GT, the gateway between Earth and the Other world has been opened, and all the evil people have come back to Earth to rain havoc.
There are more characters in this TV series, but they do not have much of a purpose, but if you want to know about these characters, go to www.dragonballgt.com to find out more.
Battles ******** There are many battles in this series, but nothing to brilliant at the beginning, as Goku has had no need to transform into a Super Saiyan as he is already powerful enough to take them on in his normal form. Also that Goku and Pan and Trunks on his side, then there is no stopping their journey. But even though after all the battles they get through, there is always more on the way. But that does not stop Goku as he is a lean, mean fighting defending thingy. There are many battles where not even a Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 is strong enough to win, and even sometimes not even Super Saiyan 3, so how does Goku do it you ask? Well I shall not tell, as it will spoil the TV series, also it gives you more of a reason to watch it.
Times / Channel ******************** This is on the Channel Toonami, but you will rarely see it, Toonami on NTL is 903, and I don't know on any other service, as we only have NTL Satellite. It is normally on during the morning around 3am, on weekends, but sometimes it is different as it seams not to be as popular as it uses to be. But here's hoping you manage to watch it, and find it entertaining.
Other ******* The animation of this TV series is very good, the TV series was made in 1996, so it is pretty old, but I really like how they have done it, it is the same how they did it with DragonBall Z and DragonBall. It makes the TV series what it is, and I would not have it at anyway different to what it is already. DragonBall GT can be funny in some places, well most places actually. It is not like laugh out loud funny, but you will chuckle from its sense of humour. It normally has stuff like if things are so predictable type things when talking to each other, you will normally get them all comically fall onto the ground, but it might not sound funny from me saying it to you, but when it is watched, it is pretty funny.
The sound effects in this TV series are awesome, you get all the voices, the sounds of the footsteps, of the good guys and bad guys powering up. Its all good really, nothing like the abnormal; it is how it would be if it was in real life. Yet maybe even better in some ways. The story is pretty good, not as good as DragonBall Z's one was, but still has the tastes. DragonBall GT's story is mainly about getting the seven Black Star DragonBalls, and that goes throughout the entire TV series, unlike DragonBall Z, when every Saga is a different story, which I find better in some ways.
The characters in DragonBall GT are great, you get the really tough hard people, that don't like anyone, and you get the kind of softer people, yet know how to be tough when the time is needed, and you always have the comic relief character, which in this case is many people, and it all makes this TV series what it is. DragonBall GT compares very good to other TV programs, I would watch this over most of the other TV programs that I normally watch, and this one is normally the most entertaining. There is only a few things I would watch instead of this, and that is DragonBall Z, and The Simpsons.
I give this TV series 5 star * * * * *, as I found it not as entertaining as DragonBall Z, yet it was still good enough to beat the 4 star ranking. I recommend that you should watch at least a few episodes of this, so then you will know if it is for you or not. You can buy the episodes on DVD from amazon.co.uk, but they are region 1, so needs a multi region or American DVD player to run it. Also there is one DragonBall GT feature length movie which is only in Japanese, so if you do find it out in English, please let me know.

Advantages: Great variety in plot and story line, characters are al unique and progress in there own way, and all serve their own purpose. Takes place on a variety of scenes, and is just great all round fun to watch. The fight scenes are also incredible to watch. Disadvantages: Some scenes go on for a tad too long, there are many shots of the characters just breathing which gets kind of annoying.
